Default Went in for recall, came out with exhaust rattle ;(

Phoned 3 Nissan dealer in my city and booked an appointment at a dealership that said that they have already done 5 cars. Figured it was my best bet.

Picked up the car and everything was good, I drove it around for a bit and everything seemed fine. I went for dinner and on the way to the movies, I decided to test the car by bringing it to redline in first gear.

And that is when I heard the rattling From 1k to 5k rpm, no rattle. But from 5-5.5K to redline, you hear the rattle. My worst fears have come to life with this recall. I have an aftermarket exhaust and I knew the recall would have to make them take the exhaust off and put it back on. And by doing so, they have done something wrong and now my exhaust rattles. It never rattled before!

What should I do? If I take it back and tell them the situation... would they tell me I am out of luck since I have an aftermarket exhaust and that is not their problem?

Put it out some jack stands and investigate the problem your self, don't trust the techs.

I would take it back and tell them to fix it. It didn't rattle before, and it's probably just an exhaust hanger bracket they didn't tighten down all the way. It would only take them a couple minutes to fix. I had a bad rattle in the back that sounded like it was coming from the hatch, so I took it in and they had it for 4 days and couldn't track down exactly what was causing it. They told me to bring it back at another time when they could put another guy on it. Then I got the recall notice and took it in for the recall. I figured I would take it back in for the rattle at a later date, so I wouldn't be without my car for days. It only took them about 3 hours to fix the recall and I got it back and now the rattle is completely gone! So it actually worked out great for me! Anyway good luck, and if they won't do it, take it to another exhaust shop, or if you can get under it just check them yourself.

that sucks man. when they did mine I ended up with an exhaust leak so I took it back to them and they still couldn't fix it. this is why I hate having my car touched by dealers.

UPDATE: I called the dealer and they said to bring it in and they will take a look. So I brought it in, they came back 30 minutes later and told me they had fixed the problem. I took it out and it still rattled.

I decided to do my own investigation and looked under the right side of the back exhaust because that is where I thought the noise was coming from. I notice the bolt that was holding up the passenger side rubber hanger looked different. It looked like it was out too much and it was closer to the sway bar then it should.

I then called the dealership and this time told them my observation. They took it in and came out and told me that I was right, that the bolt was not torqued correctly and that was why it was sitting out more, hence hitting the sway bars at high rpms. They torqued it to the right specification and now there are no rattles. It's like it was before.

This reminds me of that post some guy ranted on how people shouldn't help other people on this forum, but let an offical Nissan technician do that. Well, I'm not an official Nissan technician and I had to show them where I thought the rattle came from so that they could fix it when they failed to find it the first time.

bummer, personally i would try to fix it myself.....get it on some jack stands and have somebody rev it up for ya, it does not sound like it would be too difficult to fix....
