...Just a blanket statement that one shouldn't buy a 6-speed, 300hp sports car if they can't drive the manual transmission without reading the owners manual. Relying on a cars owner manual to teach you MT driving techniques is ridiculous.

I think it is hilarious how people who never drove manual in there life buy a 350z manual. At least learn to drive.
When to shift really should not be asked. Everyone shifts at different points, he really needs to figure out what he likes best.

)I would recommend reading the manual to any NEW MT driver... (I try to persuade as many ppl as possible to drive MTs)
but then again, i'm kinda Anti-auto, not for any particular reason and nothing against it... i just don't like it... so anyone asking me anything containing "should I" and "auto or MT" will get a definate MANUAL...
Alot of drivers have lost the "feel the car" thoughts and know less and less about their cars, just gas and go, push this pedal to go press this one to stop. It's my believe that if everyone at least knew how to drive a manual they would atleast know more about how car work than if they've just driven autos all their life...

It's funny some people will insist that newbies should get an automatic and claim that reading the manual is a sin. Let's just put our heads where the sun doesn't shine and call it a day.
Not everyone was born knowing how to drive a manual and there is no better time to learn than now.

I have donned my flame retardant (retarded?) suit.
I don't believe any Z owner is getting 25mpg in town, unless they're just looking at the retarded digital read out.
When I'm trying to save gas, I run 1st and 3rd to about 2k to 2.5K RPM, THEN, shift to sixth. It usually comes out to be at about 1000 RPM. There is no knocking or lurching, just not a lot of power. If I need power, I know which gear to shift into, and no, I haven't read the frigging manual for gear shifting info. I'm getting in the neighborhood of 19-20mpg in town when I do this. Of course, I'm always ready for the heavy foot when I "need" it, so maybe my mpg could be slightly better. 2 cents.

As a few others have said, I use 6th on the freeways only, at around 60-65. Like Davidv said, around 3k usually, sometimes 4-5k. For you guys that shift into 6th at 2k or so, why? Why would anyone want to slug around in the Z at 1500 rpm or so in 6th? If it's mileage, why have a Z?

The reasons I bought a Z were looks and speed. I want to keep this simple so everyone understands. Mostly I drive 5.5 miles to work and 5.5 miles back on crosstown city streets with lots of stop signs and traffic lights. I don't stay in 2nd or 3rd all the time for the "correct" RPMs. If you really like spending money on gas, drive stoopid in town all the time and write an extra bonus check to your favorite oil company just in case you haven't been b*tt f*cked quite enough.
FWIW, when I DO get out on the Freeway/Tollroad/Interstate, I tend to let 'er rip. O.K.?
