Anyone else have trouble filling up with gas?
In a way I'm relieved that other Z owners have been experiencing this issue and that it's not just me. On the other hand, I'm disappointed that the 350Z's have this issue to begin with!
I bought a used 05 6 MT Silverstone Z from an out of town Nissan dealership on April 9. Now that I think of it, at the time I drove off with the car, I was pleasantly surprised that they had left me half a tank of gas. "What a nice dealership!", I thought! Perhaps they filled it up knowing full well so that before I encountered the issue I was long gone (my hometown is 6 hours away from this dealership) and not in a position to physically return to the dealership and cuss them out!
Have had the car now for 5 weeks and have filled up 3 times (sold my G35 sedan this weekend so now the Z has become my daily driver). All three times the gas pump clicks off prematurely. The first time was on the drive back home when I picked up my car and it was only after I had driven off that I realized that my tank was only 3/4 full!
Last two times were in the city, with the same result. Pump clicks off when my tank is 3/4 full. The most recent fill-up was about an hour ago - when it happened I started to try and fill it up slowly, gripping the pump just enough to keep the fuel flow going and to avoid having the pump click off, but I gave up after about 30 seconds because (1) I thought I'd have at least 3/4 tank and (2) forgot what the Z's fuel tank's capacity was and didn't want to risk overfilling and having the gas overflow and cause a mess.
Am bringing my Z to a local dealership in May for its next periodic servicing and I will mention this to them.
FWIW, my G35 sedan has NEVER had this problem. Ever.

i've NEVER had a problem filling up gas. i have NO tire feathering problems. i have NO streaking on the windows. i have ABSOLUTELY NO problems with my car. everything runs perfect and everything works. i guess i lucked out.

everything is going to go wrong for you from now on... you arent gonna be able to put any gas in it and when your passenger rolls down the window to ask whats wrong you are going to find streaks on the windows and then you will drive off with no gas, pissed about the streaked window and find later that yoru tires are feathering and everything is starting to rattle
I had this prob the first few times I filled up after buying the Z.
The prospect of having to take the car to a dealer to have it sorted out was a bummer...
But whatever glitch was causing the fill-up prob seems to have worked itself out and I haven't had any difficulty in several months.
The best part being: No trip to the Nissan dealer!

I guess this will be my first post here. I found your forums while in the process of researching the 350z, I will be getting a new car in the next month or two and it could be a Z or a G35, not sure yet.
Anyways, I've had a similar problem filling up with other cars, and I've found that if I stick only 1-2 inches of the nozzle into the, umm, filler hole, it tends to work better.
Not sure if that was mentioned in the last 8 pages here, I couldn't sift through everything just to relay my experience.

Yes this was covered and wasn't a solution. The problem has to do with the sensor in the gas tank. Typically this problem occurs when the car is on some sort of an incline. There is an active TSB that involves removing the gas tank to replace the sensor in the tank. However, I think if you run the car until you get a low fuel light, then find a level place to fill up at I believe this resets/recalibrates the sensor. I did this and haven't had a problem filling up for over a year since I first tried this method.
^ The hard to fill problem has nothing to do with a sensor. It's a faulty shutter valve and it does not require the removal of the gas tank. I don't know of too many gas stations around here on an incline. I had the problem for almost 2 years and I tried everything under the sun, ended up taking it to the dealership. They replaced the valve - PROBLEM SOLVED!

I had this problem too, I found that if you just pump the gas a little slower than full speed (set the trigger on the first stop, not the second one) that the problem goes away. It happens because the gas is shooting out too fast and it's hitting the valves and bouncing back into the pump causing the vacuum seal to go off inside the pump and shutting off the gas. Pump slower and it will not splash around as much.
We also have those valves so that when you are tracking your car and taking a sharp turn your fuel doesnt cut out because of shifting gas in the tank. Ever taken an old truck with low fuel around a corner and had it buck because of no fuel?

i might take my car to wilmington, if and when my tranny goes.
i have had the same problems on a regular basis pretty much. I actually went for an oil change the other day to classic nissan and I was told there is a recall on the gas lines of the 350's and i had to take my car and drop it off one whole day. i dont know if it's related to the fill up problem but I do currently experience that problem every once in a while......
This problem isn't only happening with Z's. I noticed this happening before with my trans am, mustang, and even my dad's mercedes S class. It is just something with the new shell pumps I guess, since shell is were I notice this happening the most.
The only thing you need to tell them is that you have been having a lot of problems getting a full tank of gas. It's a common problem with Z's.
You don't really need to know the TSB number, although it wouldnt hurt to write it down in case they give you any static. The number is 05048 and applies to years 03-05. Once I found out there was a TSB for the problem I took mine in, told them the problem, and they jumped right on it and fixed it with no questions asked.
