^ i know exactly.
I dealt with it for almost two years before I had enough. It really sucked in the winter when it was freezing cold outside. It wouldn't take a full tank and I would have to fight with it and STILL not get a full tank, which meant I had to stop to get gas more often and also meant I was standing out in the cold a lot more than I wanted to. It was a royal pain in my *** for the longest time.
For MOST people this problem is minor and only intermittent, which is why we have a lot of people coming up with hair-brained excuses and "solutions".
Luckily I had the problem PERSISTENTLY so there was no denying there was a problem, and once they replaced the shutter valve the problem VANISHED completely.
Yeah, it was just a coincidence.

I tried the following and it seems to work:
1. go to Chevron (their vapor reclamation boot) seems to interrupt the flow of gas less, making it less likely to click off prematurely
2. turn the tail of the gas nozzle so that it points towards the rear of the car

I got my car in 2002 and this problem would occur once in a while but it's not indigenous to the 350Z. I have another car and it happens with that car sometimes too. It's not a big deal. I've been told sometimes it has to do with the gas pump being on a slight incline or something to that effect.

Pump Correctly
Did you know that gas pumps have three different speeds? Most pumps have slow, medium and fast. Most people insert the pump into the car and then set the handle so that they don’t have to hold the pump. Gas stations want you to do this because you are actually getting less gas this way—slow pumping reduces the vaporization of the gas. Take the extra effort to hold the pump at the first setting (slow), and you’ll get fewer vapors and more gas for your dollar. Try squeezing the handle about a third of the way to set it at the slowest setting. Listen for the pump to click when the tank is full. Don’t try to pump any more gas after you hear this click. You’ll just end up wasting gas because it will spill out of your tank.
