Yup...the light comes on, nd the display turns on when you have about 4 gallons (approx 80 miles) remaining. And the display will start flashing --- when you have about 2 gallons (40 miles) left.

Today I was on the freeway and my gas tank light came on and the computer thing said I had like 18 miles of fuel left. In reality, I had at least 100 more miles of gas, and the entire time I was on the freeway with cruise control on. After about 10 minutes it went up to a quarter tank...from empty. WTF is that all about?

Hmmmm, sounds like your gas meter is smoking crack. LOL! Thats strange, but I believe you. Seems like these cars are infamous for fuel problems. They ordered new tanks for my car and will be replacing it on Monday, along with new fuel pump and air bypass valves. So lets see what happens.

Annoying, but I have noticed this in all three of the cars.
I've pursued the gas gauge/mileage issue to the ground and my friend had a Nissan engineer (30 yrs at nissan) work help him with his Pathfinder. He asked the engineer about the nissan gas gauges and he said the Nissan gas gauges have been a constant problem over the years and he didnt think it would be fixed any time soon.

Well, I got my car back and so far so good. They gave it back to me with a half a tank. The DTE read 235. They replaced the Dual Tanks said there must have been a vacuum issue in one of the tank, the Air Bypass Valve and the Fuel Pump. They asked me to drive it till she's empty and then fill her up making sure I can put 18-19 gallons of fuel. I'm so happy to have my car back, I even gave it a present yesterday. A JWT PopCharger.

The DTE is based upon ongoing computation of your miles per gallon. If you are sitting idling it is simply telling you that you will go no miles before you run out, which is the truth if you stay there idling. It will take sitting awhile if you haven't reset anything as it computes from previous use. Even when not idling, it will go --.-- normally when you have 1.5-2 gallons of the final (hidden) reserve left. I say 'hidden' as it is there even though the dial gauge says empty, the low fuel light is on, and the dte computer shows --.-- miles left.

The issue with the air by-pass valve and the sensor are different issues and there was a tech bulletin ref to this on prior years models. If you are having a problem, there are several threads on this issue and a "search" will reduce your worrying or at least point you in the right direction.

That's about right. The gauge tells you how many miles left until some reserve number, not until it's bone dry.

But don't test it to find out how many miles you *really* have. If you fill up with about 16, that's normal.

I have owned a few Z cars over the years, an 87 300zx and a 93 300zx, I now own a 03 350z and each car has had the same type of gas problem. The gas gauge would say empty with the reserve light on and when you would fill it up the tank would only hold about 12 gallons. Thats proof that Nissan has had this problem throughout the years. Personally, it doesn't bother me that much because I usually fill the car up when the light comes on anyway. But this problem has been known by Nissan for a number of years and it still amazes me that Nissan doesn't do anything about it.

Where can I find the Technical Service Bulletin and what does it mean for me if I am OUT of warranty??

Last night I could only fill up with about 12.5 gallons and this has been a consistent problem for me for a while now.

Mine used to read good NA. I then mod'd tje fuel pump assembly per TN directions. When it reads UNDER the E line and I fil up its only 12-13 gallons so I had 5-6 left! I hate that about the car...

it might be the pump. I filled up at Sams the other night and my z wouldn't take more than a half of tank, even after starting over. I have not had this issue at any other stations. weird....

Default Gas Gauge only reas 3/4 filled up

It looks as if I'm not the only one in this boat. Nissan replaced both sending units, one in each tank yesterday and the problem is still there. I had to thrash them though, they only put 5 gallons in and called and said the gauge was working. I was like duh, it always did work. It just never went to full when you filled it up, common sense to me says, hey I should fill the car up and see what the gauge does. I guess were just smarter then the guys nissan pays to work on are cars for us. If anyone happens to find a DIY to fix this issue that would be great.

did you replace teh shutter valve too?

It's not the pump. Here is an easy way to see if it works. WHen I had the problem, my car would not go past the F mark like a normal gauge. As soon as my problem was fixed, I can go past F when I fill it up.
