BREAK-IN SCHEDULE

During the first 1,200 miles (2,000 km), follow these recommendations to obtain maximum engine performance and ensure the future reliability and economy of your new vehicle. Failure to follow these recommendations may result in shortened engine life and reduced engine performance.

- Avoid driving for long periods at constant speed, either fast or slow. Do not run the engine over 4,000 rpm.

- Do not accelerate at full throttle in any gear.

- Avoid quick starts.

- Avoid hard braking as much as possible.

- Do not tow a trailer for the first 500 miles (800 km).

But why avoid unnecessary idling?
I always warmup and cool down my car for many years

 

I think it means not to have the car idiling for a LONG time like more than 10 minutes (I don't know exactly what number I just made this up, but manuals are always vague). This causes your engine to stay at the same speed for too long.

It should be ok to warm up and cool down for a few minutes, but it is not necessary with todays engines. It is better to drive gently for the first 5 minutes because driving will warm the engine up quicker than idiling.

 

alright guys, people are going to think I'm a loonitic. I'm so trified of hurting the car that I will not drive at the same speed for more that a few seconds at a time. forget traffic flow. I'll be lurching foward then back then foward. I think I'm getting sea sick...

Hmm.. my first 1200 miles are going to be from Texas back to San Diego... in other words a long time at constant speed.
Anyone have a guess as to how often I should stop, and how much I should vary my speed?

 

After I pick up my chrome silver performance 6MT, I'd normally have to drive for about 2 hours at interstate speeds. I really never paid much attention to break-in periods before, but I want to do this correctly. So, I decided to take the 6 hour scenic route where I can vary speeds and take it easier. I can't wait. If they screw me up at the dealer, there just might be a killing there. Just kidding, but they probably will have to arrest me for making a scene. I really want this Z car, like BAD.

It's the constand rpm that you have to avoid. Not a problem, on the freeway you should be able to use 4th, 5th, and 6th at a relatively constant speed, vary the RPM and practice your heel-toe shifting all at the same time.

 

Please explain. I thought heel-toe was gas and brake for coming out of corners. You may mean double clutching, right?

 

Yeah, heal-toe shifting is the gas and brakes with one foot.

After thinking about it, I guess you could practice heel-toe on the interstate, but what fun would that be. Same goes for double-clutching (however that is a better thing to practice on straight roads plus it takes less concentration)

I hope nobody wrecks their car trying to find clever ways of making it through the break-in period.

What is the fastest (MPH) that we could go during th break in period?

 

Maybe 115mph.

It said to keep the RPM below 4000.

 

according to the manual...any speed under 4000RPM
