Damn e-3 don't make no 1700 a month man. I joined the army back in 2002 as an 18 year old came in as an e-3 bought my Z in 2003 just a week after my 19th birthday brand new my payments were 556 a month and i made 660 every 2 weeks as an e-3 stationed in germany. Hurtin like hell on money because insurance was 220 dollars for me too and cell phone bill. Now i'm an e-6 army recruiter making a lot more and only got a little over a year to finish paying off my Z man. in the airforce your not gonna rank at all dude, the higher and higher my rank went the easier my car payments became. I put my little sister in the army and she's an E-3 stationed in hawaii and her paychecks are only about 600 every two weeks. E-3 base pay is only about 1528 plus u gotta take away taxes, but the way the a.f. works you won't get that e-3 till you complete tech school. I pinned on e-5 in 2 yrs 4months in the army and e-6 in 4 years 8 months in the army. Only 22 years old with a Z and a brand new Kawasaki Zx636r. The thing that helped me when i first bought my z was 7 months after i bought i went to iraq and made about 700 dollars extra a week. But i tell all my kids that i recruit who wanna buy brand new cars when they first come in is too wait man, wait till atleast you make e-4 so you know what your looking at exactly and how your lifestyle is going to be how much your gonna spend a month on regular sh*t. Than when you get about a 2 years in buy u that brand new car. I know i was struggling with mine when i first bought it. good luck dude

Stupid nukes I only got a 97
Based on my experience, I had $24,000 saved up after being in only 1 yr 6 months...
I could've afforded a brand new Z just out of bootcamp. As a paid E-3 through bootcamp, you'll get just over $2200 in the bank when you're out. Go with Navy Federal... I have a 4.7% APR on my FX35 (put $13,000 down on it w/out a problem).

I have been in the AF for 17 years now and have always wanted a Z (since 1989). I enlisted as an E-3 straight out of basic and still could not afford one until I decided to get myself a promotion present...17 years later as I put on MSgt.
As I read, you have put your plans on hold, which I think is a good choice. But don't give your hopes up. Once you complete basic, you will not be an A1C just yet. You have to complete your 3-lvl school and then once you graduate, you will be able to sew on E-3. Good thing about being a boomer (inflight refueling) is that you will have your chance to reenlist while flying over a tax exempt zone so your SRB will be tax free. Use that SRB bonus as a hefty downpayment on your Z. This way, you will have a bargaining chip at the dealer and get what you want...not what you can afford. Also, a good thing about being a boomer, KC-x are mainly based in the US. Would suck to buy a new Z and get based in Korea where E-6 and below are not able to drive nor ship a car. As they always say...if you want to PCS, buy a car or a house and you will get orders.

+1 on the life options issue. I was in the Navy. In the military, as a single guy, it's ez to live cheaply. Many creditors prey on new military guys. Away from home for the first time, regular check, low payments, etc etc.
I remember this one guy, he had what I thought was a really gool car, Rabbit GTI but he was desperate to get rid of it because he got orders to Italy.
I didn't get a car until I knew I was going to be in one place for awhile. I was an E4 and it was new little mitsu turbo. If I could do it over again? 4 or 5 year old Honda or Toyota for low insurance and low maintenance costs. My money would have gone to savings for a house and my time would have gone to studying either for my Navy job or college degree or both.

The last three posts have been the most helpful. Thanks guys. I think this should be bumped in case any other new enlistees are thinking about a Z.

I just got back from Iraq and all I could think about was that new Z and I got it, but at what cost I was wounded in Iraq and will never be the same. If your going to enlist dont do it for a car but for your country.
