I've been out of the Air Force for a Decade now and I remember my first check in basic was less than $300 dollars. I know the AF in the 90's was trying to up the "quality of life" for enlisted folk with housing, gyms and single occupancy dorms etc..,but really they need to pay more, especially after all the down sizing they have done.

Navy here - came in at 17 as an E-1... made E-5 18 months later - at 19 which is NOT the norm. My rating was wide open and I focused on my A and C schools vs. other things... my first Z was a 1975 280Z for $700. A really fun car to learn on and fix up.
Don't be the E-3 who pays 22% on a car loan because you have no credit and want a hot ride. Take the advice you've been given to heart. By a beater if you need a car - new cars are just not worth the depreciation you take - do what they said and save your $$$ for more important things in the future.
BTW, I'm still active duty with 13 years in (I'm an officer now); however, I still didn't get my 2004 ZR until I was 30 after I had made O-3 - and I even bought that used.
Good luck in your military career - it's a fun ride!

my advice would be to get a beater, or a cheaper car to fix up for the moment. my boy is in the navy and has all these toys that he never gets to play wit cuz hes always over sees. it sucks, cuz it sits there for months wit no one using it n the value jus keeps droppin. well good luck on your decision.

im suprised that nobody here in the AF has mentioned the "substandard living" pay that we get if we are assigned to an army/marine location lol hell bud if you want a Z in college do what I did. Join the guard, have school paid for, go through ROTC while your in school, get mad cash jsut for going to school, come out as a 2nd LT and start making real money......becaose of this i owned through college and still partied with everyone else PLUS invested a good amount of money but I owned a

Man, things have really changed in the pay department for the military but then again so has the cost of things. Not to say I'm old as hell but my pay was 78 bucks a month, lived in the barracks, had a part time job making minimum wage of ONE BUCK an hour but good tips as a waiter. Plus had an allotment of 40 bucks sent to an ailing elderly relative per month and bought a nice dependable car. IT'S ALL IN WHAT YOU ARE WILLING TO SACRAFICE and how you go about achieving your goals. This cycle of giving advice to young people about saving and waiting for their desires is nothing new. We've all heard it at some point or another but we make our own decisions and most of us LEARN from them good or bad. Good luck dude.....

I'm a SSgt in the Air Force right now, and i drive a 05 350z, and ive had it since i was a SRA. All you need to do is get and 03 04 and you would be ok but make sure you check your insurance before hand. And as for the AF in Iraq, i really didnt do crap.

This man speaks the truth. I was in the AF for 11 years. I saw so many fellow service members who were married to their car and Ins payments. I remember one guy who was paying $900 per month for a toyota paseo. I never heard how much his ins was, but he was miserable for years. But he would not give up the car (?).
GL with you r decision. I was gonna reply with words of wisdom, but zand02max said it all...

All's well that ends well though. Seven years after getting out and I'm doing pretty well. Thanks to the AF.
