Default How to lighten a Z

hi guys,

First time posting, so bear with me. I guess i'll give a little info about myself. I owned an 92 NX2000 with a SR20DET and a few things here and there (it's for sale btw). I've been a car enthusiast ever since I've had my first SR20 (a 99 B14). I bought my Z about a yr ago and I love it!!! RWD is just so different compare to FWD, but those SR20s are not bad at all.

Anyways, back to the question. What are your recommendations on lightening the Z, without gutting the interior (it's my daily driver)? I always thought that instead of adding more power, reducing weight of the Z can help acceleration, plus it'll handle better with less weight. That's my goal, to reduce the weight of the Z by 100~200lb (is it possible w/o gutting?) before adding any more power. I just don't know where to start. Perhaps a set of new wheels? What are some of the lightest (and good looking) 18s nowadays? Anything else that can reduce weight?

Thanks guys!

A staple for any weight reduction: toss the spare. Since this is a dailey driver, I can't suggest anything else that won't compromise saftey.

hey, not going to be much help with your question, but watch where you post as for you are . and the only way I found any significant gains was to gut.

forged wheels, lightened flywheel and lightweight pulley are the best things since they reduce rotational mass. Also lose the catalytic converters and factory exhaust, you will lose ~25-50 lbs with test pipes and an aftermarket catback exhaust. Get rid of the spare tire, jack, and tools. You could buy a carbon fiber hatch (the hood wouldn't save much since the factory aluminum hood is lightweight), shave the rear wiper and toss the wiper motor, get a braille 11 lb battery, buy racing seats, and remove the 2 lb weight under the plastic inside the hatch.

here is a helpful link (just replace the '*********' with '3 5 0 z - t e c h')

Weight reduction suggestions:

1) Replace stock wheels with Nismo wheels (or, for that matter, replace any stock part with an available Nismo part).
2) Insist that your gf lose weight (maybe about 10 to 25 lbs.)
3) Remove rear windshield wiper and washer (maybe remove the fronts as well)
4) Keep your gas tank half-empty
5) Budget for carbon-fiber components (all and anywhere you can install these)
6) Remove passenger seat (you don't need it)
7) Dump the spare tire (who needs a spare tire?)
8) Fill the back hatch space with helium balloons.

Good point... I'm caught.

Interesting image though: GF riding on the floor.

Titanium exhaust
Racing seat
Take out spare tire
Replace side and rear glass with lexen
Carbon hatch
Buddy Club QF rims
Light flywheel

That should be close to 100lbs if not more...

based on all these replies and related tangent threads, there is little or nothing you can do to lighten your z unless you comprimise daily driving. Let's put this to bed already. Sheesh.
