Purchasing an Extended Warranty on '03 w/50k or so miles?
Question for the knowledgeable. BTW, I did search both here and on google quite a bit but never found an answer.
Let's say you buy an 03 Z as a used car w/50K miles from a Toyota dealership and you want an extended warranty. First, can you buy an extended warranty on this vehicle from Nissan? If not, then can Toyota really sell me a Vehicle Service Agreement (what they call extended warranties) when the vehicle is a Nissan even though a Toyota dealership sold it? Thirdly, what should I expect to pay
Basically can this car get a nice extended warranty at all considering its mileage? If, so, then ballpark cost?

Check around because most extended warranties must be purchased while the factory warranty is still in force (36mo/36K miles). There may be a few you can buy after that point, but may cost you a lot more.
Extended warranties don't usually care where you bought the car. The Toyota dealer sells warranties for Toyotas but will probably be able to offer you a generic 3rd party warranty for any of their used cars.
You're going to have to contact some of the online extended warranty companies to get price estimates. It varies greatly by the type of coverage, the age of the car, etc.

I called Toyota itself today rather than the dealership. It appears that Toyota can indeed sell me the Toyota-backed extended warranty which provides for any work to be done at any Nissan service center and there would be no reimbursement but rather Toyota would pay the service center up front for the work.
Sounds good, just sounds expensive at around $2400 for a 4year/50K mile plan. NOW, the Toyota rep DID say that that was the MSRP for the plan and that there was wiggle room for negotiation which I already new BUT just couldnt get him to tell me what the actual invoice was, so I have no idea how low I can offer.
Basically the Gold package is what thye are offering me shown herehttp://www.toyotafinancial.com/pyv/extended_service_coverage/u_index.html
don't know how to do loinks yet so just copy and paste

Platinum coverage isnt offered for this car, only gold. I checked with Toyota themselves on this one. I got the dealer down to $2000, w/no deductible this morning. When I return after signing the final paperwork this morning with the car then I'll post what I paid for it total. I don't think any one will balk. but who knows. Nice to be a Z owner! And to think I was orginally looking for a Corolla or Civic just to get me by for 2 yrs till I get another car . Never know what you will run into while looking.
On a side note, I have had nothing but good things to say from my experience with this dealer so far. I'll name them, the deal breakdown, and recommend here as soon as I return from dealership with the car.
PS - hope they dont screw up the redisign cause I might just wanna get more Z's later

DMS, sounds like an OK deal. The fact that it is backed by Toyota is a good sign. Many aftermarket warranties are sold by fly by night companies and often are not worth the paper they are written on. Many of these fly by night companies close up on a regular basis and re-open under another name. You bought yourself an insurance policy and some peace of mind. Enjoy the car and don't look back.

You buy extended service agreements for what you do not know about the car. One major repair on the tranny or engine could cost you over 2,000.00 in labor charges alone. If you want the comfort then buy it.

be very careful on those warranties. They are not all they are cracked up to be.
READ ALL THE FINE PRINT too.
Salesman will tell you anything you want to get you to buy it. When it comes down to cancelling it or getting work done, its usually an excuse why something cannot be done and a big run around
