First accident in my Z

I thought this car (prius) was going to pull into the driveway that I was exiting from. He ended up going straight as I was pulling out. I clipped the rear of his vehicle. I am most likely at fault here, but am not sure if I should go through my insurance.
The damage on his vehicle is minor. No dents or cracks, just a huge scuff. My ride has a nice big scuff and some minor scrapes on the front bumper.
I am glad that the guy was not a *****. We actually had a decent conversation. He is willing to bypass the insurance companies, but I'm not sure about this.
I have a 1k deductible, which is probably more than both of our bills combined. Should I just be safe and report it? Part of me wants to foot the bill out of pocket, to avoid the deductible and possible raise in insurance. On the other hand, if I report it, I won't be liable for claims down of the road.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

if the guy seemed ok and you had a descent convo i would fix it out of pocket
especially if he lives close
drive down to his place one day to talk to him
take a look at his house, is it nice? does he drive a nice car? does the guy have a family
if he looks financially stable he would be less likely to try and rip you off
if he looks bad off, go thru the insurance.
btw, welcome to the boards

On one note that is what you pay insurance for. However, on the other hand you don't have an obligation to report it to them unless you feel you want them to foot the bill for it. Like the others said I would talk to him. See if he can get an estimate from a body shop and see what the estimate looks like. If it's just a scuff and it's only your paint on his vehicle maybe it can just be buffed out. Good luck.

a. Report the accident.
b. Visit your insurance company for assistance. For some reason drivers are afraid of their insurance company. You do pay premiums? Talk to the pros.

If you had an accident report or pictures this should help protect you against future claims. If not, prior to paying the bill have him sign a document stating that damages have been repaired and no future claims will be made.

If you do not expect any money from him at all, then sure, don't file a claim if you don't want to. It's his risk for not going through insurance.

if you pay out of pocket of go through insurance..it really kinda just evens out almost (depending on your age and record). I been driving for 7 years with a clean record before I had my first incident.
Damage estimate: $1400.
I paid 500 for my deductible. My premium went up an extra $300 a year. It should be up for about 3 years they said, so 900 bucks for three years.
So 900 +500 = 1400 paid after 3 years (same as the damage estimate)
Go through insurance. Not only do you have to fix his car, but yours as well if you were at fault. Repaint will cost about 500-600 bucks for that guy.

Actually I have a 1K deductible as well. With the savings in premiums vs. a $500 deductible my break-even point is around 18 months. Meaning I could put $500 in the bank just from a lower premium to cover the difference in deductible. After that it's money in my pocket. So unless I plan to make claims more than once every 18 months, which history shows I'm nowhere near that, it makes sense.

Me too. I figure insurance is for the grand catastrophe, not for small stuff. (Although I agree all accidents should be reported to your insurance co., as a protection against future claims, as noted above.)
For that kind of thing, you might not get any rise in your premiums. Some companies have a "one free accident" sort of outlook, where they won't raise you for minor stuff, depending on your long-term history with them.

Yeah, sad that my first post has to be an accident thread. I've been reading this forum though since late 2005 when I actually started making enough to buy my baby. Learned alot here.
Thanks for all the advice. I'll try to meet up with the guy this weekend to get an estimate. If it's a decent price, I'll just pay it off and be done with it (with a writtten contract as someone mentioned).
As for my ride, I wonder if it's repairable or if it's just cheaper to put a new lip on? Guess I'll be searching around the forums tonight.
