OP, welcome to the Army (of course, that's based on if/when you get though Basic and AIT, which really ain't hard). Do you know if you're getting lump sum or increment payments of your bonus? My guess would be increments since you have to pass basic before you get it. After that, you'll get lump sums. Expect to see less than $10k from that bonus. My advice, wait 'till you're at LEAST a PFC before stepping into a Z. If not, be prepared to not do ANYTHING with your life making more money since E-1/E-2 don't get paid for ****. Maybe wait 'till after your first deplyment.

Now beat your face until I get tired Private.

Actually only less than 1% of actors get paid millions. But I get your point, our military is severly underpaid. One of the reason I got out.

Hmmm, The OP is going to have some problems in my opinion. I cant believe he signed a contract without knowing what it said. Cmon, when I joined the Army I knew exactly what was going on. What duty station, what my bonus was going to be. Sounds like the OP may be a sucker that just signs papers without reading them. Please stay far away from car dealerships OP, you will get taken for a long ride. Your the guy that they are dreaming of. A guy that just signs away without reading anything. Except after the fact.

I never understand why people will sit down and read a contract for the 1st time after they sign it ?????????????????????????????????????

hehe the nicest cars you will see on base are always driven by the generals or the e1-4 ranks........by the way I am an e4, under 25, have 3 moving violatons and my insurance thru USAA was less than 100 bucks a month, you might want to have them recheck that.....actually nevermind that 100 bucks a month was on cadet ranks thru ROTC but it shouldnt be that cheap....

put that into your TSP (thrift savings plan), you will thank yourself in the long run. if they had that program when i first joined back in 1988, i would be pretty well offf right now. plus if you do a deployment to Iraq, that money can also be saved up to get a pretty nice payment on one as well. have fun. any idea where your first duty station is going to be once you graduate AIT?

not true. here at Campbell there are a lot of nice cars on post. rank does not have anything to do with it. and i agree with the USAA. insurace is a lot lower than anything you can find on the public market

I agree... rank really has nothing to do with it. Actually, from what I've seen, the field-grades drive trucks and family cars. The enlisted and O-1 through O-3's have the nicer cars I've seen.

Never been to Campbell, but other installations I've been to/stationed at have more rice than anything.

Was I the one who said that I didnt read my full contract. Of course I read the WHOLE thing. The is absoluty no way of knowing where you will be stationed after AIT. Where the army wants you, thats where you go.

After going though my contract I found out that my bonus for signing up is.... get ready for this..... 15k!!!! Thats what you wrote. Sounds to me like you didnt read it until after you signed it.

By the way, you do have a choice as to where you will be stationed. That is in the contract too !!!!Funny whats in a contract. Things like how much your bonus will be, where you will be stationed ect...

When I joined I got a 12K bonus(back in 1998) and choice of duty station. I chose Hawaii. While at basic a recruiter from the Old Guard was there and talked me into going to DC. Great choice on my part. The Old Guard is a hell of a unit.

As far as the bonus goes you will get 50-60% after you graduate basic and make it to your 1st duty station. Then you will get the remainder in yearly increments.

station of choice is not always an option now. I have only seen a handful of people get that option. Most will get training of choice(job) and the other incentives like cash/college money. Depends on needs of the Army at the time they enlist. I got a choice when I signed up back in 01, but was Airborne and had 3 choices, chose Bragg. Some do, some don't.

well with the army wanting to enlist more people I would think that they would offer anything to get people in. If you tell them your not joining unless you go here or there, I can almost bet all the money I have that they will send you where you want to go.

Not to burst your bubble but 1000/month is chit. Not trying to put you down. Just saying that you are just starting out, like we all did. That 15K bonus if it's taxed and in one check will become 8K before you can say haji. Between the price of the car and your ins., the majority of your $$ will be gone. Not a great financial decision. If you need your kicks then get a cheap, reliable car and a couple year old crotch rocket. Just my opinion. Good luck in the service and thanks for serving our Country.

Welcome to the Army.

I have been in the Military since 1998, on active duty the last 5 years. I have been deployed 3 times, 2 to Iraq and once to Afghanistan.

Like everyone has said, yes you will have a nice chunk from your bonus, but we don't know all your circumstances. Are you married or single? if single, then you can blow your money a little easier.

Take your time, and save your cash, then get a car later. You will want other things too when you get to your first duty assignment, and with a car and insurance and all that, you WILL be broke. If you get a car thats 100 a month or paid outright for 4-5k then you will have a car to get around in and still be able to live on the weekend. After a few years, then trade up tp a newer nicer car.

i know you want it bad, i was the same way. I got the Z after my 2nd deployment, once I had a lot of stuff paid off and some stuff for a house.

Trust us all, we have been there and done that. But my guess is you are going to get it and 6 months later hate life and hate the army cause your always broke.

my 2 cents.
