What I find curious about the IIHS results is that 350Z is number three HIGHEST and yet Infiniti G35 is number two LOWEST (see here).
Says a lot about the difference in demographic between the two!

EDIT: Wow just noticed G35 has almost half the fatality rating of the ES330, which is essentially the Buick of Lexuses (which is like, the Buick of Japanese luxury brands)!

The only "sports car" on the list is the S2000 purely because side airbags aren't offered. It even said its a safe car aside from that. The entire list is comprised of SUV's, pick-up trucks, and sub-compact/compact economy cars. No real surprise there, and it makes me chuckle that everyone runs out to buy SUV's when they have a kid "because they are safer." I'll stick to sports cars and maybe a four door sports sedan when I decide to be a dad.
one thing u have to ask is how they got their numbers. . . did they simply go by number deaths or did they go by the number of deaths taking into account the number of Zs out there. If they did it the first way, the number would be misleadingly high. the Z is a bestseller. they should have done it the second way to get an accurate number. . . cus there are a lot more 350z's out there than say pontiac solstices.

the Z is mentioned in the article, but is not actually listed as one of the top 20 most dangerous. the s2000, however, is.

But it's not for the reasons you might think. In this case, says Russ Rader, communications director for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), an organization that represents the interests of the insurance industry, the 350Z is part of a group of vehicles that tends to be driven by younger, less experienced or riskier drivers, and stands out for having high death rates, through no particular fault of the car.
"When they are in crashes," he adds, "they're particularly serious ones."

Which goes back to my point about the difference in demographic between G35 and Z, which are, technically speaking, almost equal in terms of safety, yet on the two extremes in terms of the IIHS analysis.

You can't beat MPG or oil consumption. Bang bang bang son!!!
If you actually read it you will see that they said this about the Z...
"the 350Z is part of a group of vehicles that tends to be driven by younger, less experienced or riskier drivers, and stands out for having high death rates, through no particular fault of the car."
and like others said was just used as an example and isnt even on the top 20 list...
