but at work, as much as this hurts and sounds, we put regular unleaded in our M6's and M5's. they dont have any problems or nothin.
so are there really any problems that can go wrong with ur car?

Well, that's true, but in order to prevent knock, the ECU retards timing, which lowers perfromance and increases fuel consumption.
Fuel quality and additives will vary by brand, but 91 octane is 91 octane, regardless of brand.
A meaningless and generally false generalization.

1. ECU's are designed to prevent knocks from happening
2. With the same oct level, they vary by brands
3. First full tank of gas provided by the dealer is the lowest oct gasoline

but i was just sayin im sure an M6 has a high compression engine too
It depends on how much you value your car. If like me you are actually a lover of the car and not just a poser you will follow the manufacturers recommendations on fuel and oil because that's what countless hours of engineering have come up with.
It's always better to have your car run the way it was designed to than to have your ECU adjust settings to stop engine damage. the money you save on fuel you'll probably end up spending on maintenance down the track anyway.
Would you feed your child dog food because it was cheaper and they can still live without the proper nutrients?

yah, the lower the octane means the higher the combustion temperature which would in turn "burn up all the nast shiz" in yer engine in theory. higher octane fuel burns at a lower temp....
i dunno i just put in 91 cuz its the best we get in AZ. some stations have 100, i put in 5 gallons of 100 mixed with 91 once....the car felt more smooth, yet more expensive

go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating for more info.
Fuel choices are one of the few things that I can say "consult your owners manual, and obey it"
EDIT: terrasmak beat me to it.

I think the simple answer is = your Check Engine light may come on.
I do not believe that you can use and get away using low octane 87 on European cars - they MUST run on 91 octane gas always.
Pls. make sure about your statement/s in regards to your M5 and M6's cars - they are Bimmers right?
They WILL NOT run on regular 87 unleaded - PERIOD.
Even if you pump 87 then use an octane booster from Pep Boys it still is not the same.
As a car dealer here in San Francisco California I see these stupid questions asked all the time from people thinking of buying a BMW/Mercedes/Audi/Volvo then wanting to cut corners and put cheaper gas on their expensive rides - really clueless!

And if you did pump low octane gas on your Euro ride you would have to pump all your gas out of your tank and drain your fuel lines as it may damage sensors and/with low oxygen readings. Then you would need a code scanner to reset your soon-to-light-up Check Engine light.
Good luck on your next Smog Check DMV renewal registration.

I live in Japan, and we only put 100 octane in the Z since that what the Z's engine is designed and setup for here. Obviously, you can get by with less since 100 is not even sold in the US and the engine is setup for a lower octane. Personally, I would put the best gas in. It is not much of a difference in price. If you can afford this car, you can afford the gas.

Leaded gas is leaded... and it was added to prevent detonation and help fortify valve seats.
You need premium because if you go with lower octane fuel (iso-octane is a hydrocarbon with a high flash point), The gasoline is more likely to pre-ignite (sparkless ignition) or detonate (a condition where the combustion of the fuel happens too rapidly). Both of these conditions can damage your motor.
It's not definitley going to hurt your motor... Only if you put strain on it. But with all the different loads you put on your car, and the relatively low cost of premium, (The difference between regular and premium is less than 10%) wouldn't you rather be safe?
