Default Windshield replacement (and a bonus!)

I recently decided to get my cracked windshield replaced. I was apprehensive at first, as I had heard all of the stories about the 350Z windshield having to come OEM from Nissan to the tune of $1500+. Well, the repair shop that my insurance company hooked me up with did it for a total of $357 (all but the $100 deductible being billed to insurance.) The possibility exists that this could be a substandard-quality windshield, but it seems to fit perfectly, and it’s complete with the center Matrix-tint dots and blackout behind the mirror placed the same as on the original windshield. I’m not sure where the idea is coming from that the 350Z windshield is a nightmare to replace, because that certainly wasn’t my experience.

And as an unexpected bonus, the repairman offered to run my V1 hardwire cable completely through the A-pillar down to the fuse box kickpanel, removing the annoying wraparound that you get when you run the power cable from the windshield side of the A-pillar over to the driver’s door side. So for anyone that has a hardwired detector install, be sure to mention it to your windshield repairman if you want to eliminate the wraparound. It should be a simple thing for him to do with the windshield off.

Sorry if this is old information, but it was new to me and I thought it might help someone else out.

Default same here

I just did the same thing with my M3. I ended up getting it replaced for $270. I don't think there is much difference between the glass. All windshields are so soft now that it might almost better to replace with cheaper ones.

I had a question on your radar dectector. How is it mounted exactly, would you happen to have any pictures you could post?

Thank you

Andrew

Andrew,

My detector is hardwired in pretty much the same fashion as most here. I run the power lead from the detector (mounted on the windshield) through the headliner above the windshield over to the driver's side A-pillar, down the inside of the A-pillar to the dash, and (now) through the left side of the dash down to the fusebox next to the dead pedal. On that end, the power jack on the line is clipped off, the power is connected to the cigarette lighter fuse, and the ground is grounded to the chassis (mine is grounded to a box under the steering column, although there are lots of grounding choices.) Thanks again to Shogun for all of the help with my install! Pictures to follow (they're not very good, but they should give you the idea.)

For more info and much better pics than mine, check the following thread:

Driver's side A-pillar. Notice no visible wires, as the power line runs down the inside:

Last one (sorry for the blurry focus, but it was getting late.) This is the lower part of the driver's side dash assembly. The power lead runs behind this and down to the fusebox.

I hope these pictures helped.

Thanks for your input, but I wouldn't call a $100 deductible 'getting ripped.'

exactly. I don't care if it is a $3000 dollar windshield right now. $100 deductable just means that I got my insurance money's worth.

I'm confused what wraparound you are talking about with the wiring. I crossed mine over to the door side of the a pillar at the headliner. I initially started to do it at the dash, but that may be where you were having the problem.

The wraparound I'm referring to is where you have the orange line at the top of the A-pillar, right between the black plastic and the grayish headliner. I have curtain airbags, so there was no way I was going to run it through the headliner up there, and I didn't like the way that it looked passing around the outside. Now, it passes from the headliner/windshield/A-pillar joint down through the inside of the A-pillar to enter the fusebox through the dash panel. There are no visible wires at all (except for where it plugs into the V1.)

I have side curtains, too (notice the logo in the pic). Just push it in with the edge of a credit card. That picture is installed, with no visible wire.
