Yeah, my 5AT is slow alright . . . just murdered a few high-powered cars at autocross this weekend -- a couple of Z06s, a Ford Cobra, a Porsche, and a several STis. Unfortunately, there are still a few drivers who compete at the National level (one former National champion several times) who are still faster than me.

With the right mods, your 5AT can be real fast . . . here are our results (fastest raw time of each driver) from yesterday's autocross (I'm #18):

http://www.sasca.org/forum/uploaded/...r-2008_raw.htm

The 1st three are shifter carts so they don't really count. #4 is one of the fastest driver in the country.

I'm a drag racer but always wanted to autox my 5AT....do you manually shift when running the course? Any heat issues with the tranny?

My 5AT runs 11.3 @ 125 in the 1/4 mile...thats pretty fast

I usually drive on manual mode . . . 2nd gear all the way. The Z has plenty of torque for autocross. I have not had any issues with the tranny overheating. Oh yeah, the Z06 drivers were not very happy with me this weekend. And my Z is still NA.

BTW, I'll be talking to you about your FI Z. You have the Vortech SC, correct?

NO...I have APS TT with N20 and a newly built shortblock. I don't think spraying the N20 would be good for autox

Z U ...are you running a tranny cooler?

Oh that's right, you have the APS TT. I read your post on trying out Sharif's valve body upgrade.

No tranny cooler. Most of the runs in auto-x are between 40-60 seconds, mostly in 2nd gear. Really not too hard on the motor & transmission, especially if you have good lines & you're smooth. But after yesterday's launch at the start line at around 4K RPM & redlining 1st soon after, I may need one . . .

Launching at 4K...are you sure about that. Theres no way you can keep the tires from breaking loose with your foot on the brake at 4K

In autocross, you can launch whenever you want once you've been cleared.

MT or AT its all similar performance. i just think AT kinda kills the feel the Z gives. downshifts are just boring... heeltoe is the way to go!

Either way the Z is the nicest and Best car for the $

I think what coachk was asking was how you were revving your engine to 4K at a dead stop. I guess I'm asking that too.

I thought for auto the computer restricts brake launching to 3.5K unless you disconnect the brake light? correct me if I'm wrong.

When you say launch, is autox a rolling start or from a dig.

Not quite sure what you mean by this...are you saying the ecu will cut fuel if you are on the brake and over 3500rpms?

Yes & no. The start point (where my car is) is normally about ~15-20ft from where the timing light is (timer that actually starts your timed run). I preload & when my rear tires break lose (with my rear end swiveling), I let go. RPMs are racing normally past 4K by the time I cross the timing light. The course this weekend was perfect for this setup since it was almost 75 yards before the next turn. I've already swapped to a 3.5FD so that may account for my ~300-500 higher rpms already.

I don't think it does a fuel cut... the throttle is electronically controlled so I see no reason the computer cant just keep the RPMs below 3000 if you have the brake applied. I read somewhere that you could disconnect something under the rearend of the car, but it was never specified what. Maybe disconnecting the brake position sensor (is there even such a thing) from the ECU? So the computer doesnt know you have the brake applied...

I think that it's pretty easy, really. You drive to your local dealer and trade in your auto for a manual, but why would you want to? Why is this silly thread still going?
