Thumbs down My ECU took a dump and killed my Z at speed.

Two-day DE with PCA. Day one, the Z takes a **** in the middle of the third session, 4th gear coming out the last turn heading into the back straight. Goes into fail-safe and I roll into the pits. Self-diagnostics shows a code 605. Call the dealership to confirm what it is. ECM.

Leave track and make it to dealer 20 minutes after closing. My SUPER tech stays after to pull all of the data, clear the code and discuss if it can happen again. We decide that it's got to be a fluke since none of us has ever heard of this happening.

Day two, 10 minutes into first session, ***** to the wall, sliding my way through traffic and it does it AGAIN. ARGGGH! Would you believe that it happened in the exact same spot? What are the chances of that happening? Roll into the pits again and let it idle for a bit, turn it off and restart. Uh-oh. This time the car stays in fail-safe for 10 minutes. This time I have to drive back to the paddock at 1,200 RPM in first gear. Yea!

Same code. Same ****. Looks like I'm getting a new ECU, the CD0002 update. The current one (CD0000) seems to have a problem with repeated WOT. Glad I paid $195 to drive three sessions out of eight. :-/

I don't know if the same thing happened to me. I was on 4th gear making an right turn to go on the highway when it felt like the power was cut off. I had to drop to third gear to gain the momentum back so i can merge to the highway. It might be the TCS kicking in but i didn't see it come on. The car behind going the same way started honking. I think the car slides too easily and needs a new ecu too.

Damn, Brad. Sorry to hear that. I can only imagine how irritated you must have been to not get all your runs in. Glad you're getting the updated ECM, though.

Clint better take good care of ya, or he and I will have to have a little chat. lol (Riiiiiight. If I ever have any problems, you're the first person I'm calling--I KNOW you'll get it taken care of. )

Thumbs down

387 views. A car shuts down for no reason and there's only three responses? Maybe if I posted about some ghey-*** body kit there would have been a flood of discussion.

Sorry to hear about the problems you had..

i have CD0000 (and we've been testing CD0001) and weve done repeated WOT tests, over several dozen on the CD0000 on the dyno and haven't had any problems.. this may or may not be due to the reflash..

if you're getting a new ECU, keep that old one, and you can use it as a spare if nissan is willing give it back to you.... perhaps flash it...

but this isnt the first time i've heard of this happening.. i saw another CD0000 crap out b4... but i dont know if it was from repeated WOT or electrical failure that fried it.

Does CD0000, CD0001 and CD0002 refer to the ECU hardware and software or just the software? If it is just the software it is possible to get the dealer to flash my CD0000 to CD0002?

Thank you, Cheston. Do you know who it was that had this failure and any way I can get in touch with them?

Software. Yes, I saw it done to another Z this weekend.

Default ECU

Interesting that it happened in the same spot on the track.......I would want to look for something moving around tugging on the wiring harness.

Just a thought.

I thought the same thing since the G-forces would have been following the same profile.

Anyway, hope you get it fixed ASAP.

Check the wires! I agree that its fishy that it happened at the same spot on the track. That's too much of a correlation to ignore.

Damn, Brad. What a bummer. You're one dedicated Z driver to have kept the car through all of its troubles. I bet your dealer's service department knows you VERY well...

and you never know when you'll need a spare ECU...

I forgot to tell you that right before you pulled into the paddock, that 996 Turbo owner was asking me about the 350 and how reliable it was. I had just told him that it was fairly reliable and I had no problems w/ mine when you pulled in and yelled "MY POS CAR JUST TOOK A DUMP."

Doh.

Michael.

CD0000,1,2 are the software updates from nissan..

0001 is a little more reliable and less prone to crashes and easier to Flash than the 0000s, but all three are flashable..

While that would seem totally viable, I honestly believe that it was just dumb luck. Sort of my car's way of saying, "I'm going to **** you again, but at least you'll make it to the pits."

The last corner of MSR is the biggest, smoothest corner on the track. I had already gone around 5 laps before it died again on Sunday. There are five other WOT corners that put 5 to 10 times the strain on the cars balance that "Big Bend" does, so I just can't see that being a suspect circumstance.

I will ask that all harnesses are secured though when my new ECU comes in. Thanks.

I'm getting a new one, but thanks for the offer! Nissan Tech says that I'm the first person EVER to have my particular failure. Joy. I want to be the first on the track, but not the first to fail.
