Z registration Fees after a year
I think this is the most I've paid for registration in my life!
605.00 in San Diego CA. Is this what you guys are paying?

Every state has there own way of figuring the cost. In New York we pay for 2 years. It goes by the weight of the car/truck. I paid about $120 and that also includes a fee for my vanity plates..

That's not so much. In 1996 I paid over $600 for my 3-year-old Maxima, here in Washington. It was based on the calculated value of the car, based on a few different factors.
A few years ago some lunatic had a law pass that forces the state to set license tabs at $30. Now I like paying less, but this place is practically paralyzed on any sort of transportation improvements. They want a nice place to live but they don't want to pay for it. Of course it can't help that nobody can agree on a compromise between green-friendly mass transit vs. yuppy-friendly road improvements.
Anyway, the valuation used in the old formula was very biased against the owner and for the state. It definitely needed revising, reducing the amount (which is why the $30 fee passed in the first place -- people felt ripped-off). But there has to be a more appropriate middle ground.

Reg was 189 or something close to that when I bought it new....maybe I should start watching the news or something because this 300% increase was news to me.

California sucks, that's why we are recalling Gov. Gray Davis.
On top of the 8%-9% sales tax on the new car we pay another 2% in Vehicle License Fees. We need to recall all the tax and spend Politicians. These are the same guys who gave us the California Energy Crisis. We need The Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
California's vehicle license fees, which are based on the value of the car or truck, tripled Friday as state officials allowed a controversial provision of a law which had been gradually lowering them to kick in.
The fee is calculated at a sum equal to two percent (2%) of the purchase price of the vehicle and depreciates over an 11-year period.
The increase in Vehicle License Fees that was announced on Friday, June 20, 2003, affects vehicle registrations that become due October 1, 2003, or later. Vehicle registrations that become due before that date will be unaffected by the increase.
Vehicle owners whose registrations become due on and after October 1, 2003, cannot pay early to avoid the increase. The department mails billing notices approximately 60 days in advance of your vehicle registration expiration date.
2.00 percent of the value of your car. In subsequent years, however, the 2.00 percent is calculated from 90 percent, then 80 percent, then 70 percent of your car's initial value. If you paid $35,000 for your car, this is what your license fee schedule would look like:
Year 1 - 2.00% of $35,000 = $700.00
Year 2 - 2.00% of $31,500 = $630.00
Year 3 - 2.00% of $28,000 = $560.00
Year 4 - 2.00% of $24,500 = $490.00

I just got mine, and it's for $226. Due 9/20/2003.
It sounds like our increased fees go into effect sometime between 9/20 and 10/8.
Wow, that's a real crapload. I'm glad mine ducked in right before the increase.

Thanks for the info OSCARMAYER00 ....what a bummer though, I guess us ca tax payers are going to pay for the mistakes of these retards running the state. I don't know about Arnold running the state though just imagine all the one liners he will be able to use in his campaign...jeje

Holy crap! I couldn't imagine paying fees like that for registration every year. Thank goodness I live in Texas--I feel bad for the Cali Z owners for crap like that.
