Default Z was broken into

So my girlfriend's 2007 Z was broken into a few days ago. They broke the drivers side window to get in and steal a few expensive items. Not only that, they destroyed the trim (outside A pillar area) on both the drivers and passengers side trying to get in, before they decided to just break the window.

Anyway, I noticed that when she would lock the car the horn would not sound. So i tried the Panic button and the lights flashed, but the horn would not sound. Lastly, i turned on the car and tried pushing the horn, and as i expected, it did not sound. I looked under the steering wheel area and did not notice any wires cut. I checked the fuse box near the clutch and everything was in place. I popped the hood and checked the fuse box near the battery and the Horn relay was not tampered with and was in place.

Does anyone have ANY idea what they could have done that caused the horn to not work? I can't find any visible damage to the steering wheel, console, under the hood, etc. TIA.

shame to see you use up one of your rare posts on something bad like this.

I would try running a wire directly to the horn from the battery just to make sure it didn't crap out.

Hmm....when did i ever say the car was parked outside? It was actually parked in her underground garage that you need a remote to get into. Is that why your post count is so high...because of all your great feedback?

Yeah, it really is a shame. I don't ever post because i don't personally own a Z. I joined back in 05 because i was seriously considering a Z at the time. I never posted but i was an active lurker. I ended up going with an 04 M3 but because of my love for the Z i got my girl to get one

thanks for the idea, i'll try it.

Welcome to the forums and to solve your problem:

Silent Mode?

Hold the lock and unlock button and the horn will sound verifying idk "normal mode"

or

Look at the horn in the front and see if the wire has been cut.

Probably not.

After rereading the OP's first post, its probably a wire cut somewhere. Just throwing options out there.

his car is not on "silent mode". even when depressing the horn, it does not function.

op, this might or might not be a practical solution for you but i have always had a viper alarm with the 2-way transponder installed in my cars along with the proximity sensor in order to detect such occurrences. i am sure that someone is going to say that this will not work, and will not prevent theft, but if someone is f*cking with your car, you will know. though nobody has tried breaking into my car (not sure whether the alarm is responsible), i actually did catch some f*ck do a hit and run on my old car and i was able to catch up to him, obtain his information, and call the cops. works for me.

Sorry i forgot to mention i tried the silent mode feature. I didn't think it would work because i tried pressing the horn and got nothing, but i tried it anyway.

No idea if the alarm went off or not...when we got to the car in the morning there were no flashing lights or anything, everything seemed normal. Unfortunetly there is no surveillance. Her car was 1 of 14 that were broken into that night. She lives in a great area too... just proves you can't get away from crime. Side note - they are putting surveillance in now

Z Newbie here, you can put the car on Silent mode so the horn doesn't honk when you lock the car? Sorry to jack the thread, if someone could give me a simple response it'd be much appreciated

Sounds like the horn probably started beeping when they opened the door, so they opened the hood and cut the wires to the actual horn. On my '06, the horn is on the passenger's side, under the bumper cover, in front of the radiator support. Look for cut wires in that area.

Capt Dirk, did you say it was secured in a parking garage, NO, so STHU, regardless your gf is the dumb one for leaving valuables in her vehicle!

Lesson Learned!

I am going out shopping to spend $1500 at an outlet mall!

Hell.. Garage, secured, alarm or not..

The cardinal rule is no visible items in the car. Anyone who's dumb enough to leave an electronics store on display for all to see. Is just asking for it.

my roommate knew they broke into my truck outside once, so i told him to be careful with what they left out.........of course, he leave all kinds of junk in the front set of a non-tinted truck to include an empty purse....theives dont know that....so they broke his window.......they cried about it and i laughed...serves them right.....

as does your gf.......

hold lock and unlock button for more than 5 seconds

until you see your car lights blink couple times.

try reading FAQ or manual, you will learn something

new!!

what i do EVERY time before i get in the car is, pressing

and holding unlock button for 3 seconds. so even before

i get in the car windows open by itself. this is useful to

me because i leave the windows open all the time when

i drive,
