Default gas needle dropping faster than b4--no mods.

before I post this, i DID search : "needle" "gas needle" " fuel needle" and "fuel" to get an idea of whats going on but had no luck.

Issue:

I drive MAINLY highway miles and with a full tank without going heavy on the pedal(due to high gas prices), I get 360-400 a tank driving between 55-65mph.

before: On a full tank, my needle would come to the quarter tank mile at 120-125 miles.

now: At a quarter tank, I only get 80 miles.

YET, I do see the needle change positions when doing a soft launch from a traffic light or when coming off the highway a little tight.

Before I take it to the dealership(under warranty), suggestions, ideas, thoughts anyone?????????

i have a 2007 base MT.

thanks,

You can't go by the needle and how much it moves. The only accurate way to check the mileage is to fill up everytime, divide the number of miles by the gallons used. My needle is extremely spastic and is the LEAST reliable way to judge changes.

the only thing I use the needle for is to be aware of when I need to put more gas in.. as the others said, the only reliable way to measure fuel usage is to do the math yourself.

are you absolutely sure your gas mileage recently went to ****?

Fuel pressure can change the needle. If one day you have more pressure in the tank (i.e. hot day) then most likely the pressure will be higher and your needle will go higher.

true, but isnt the tank and all its sensors all digital, so it is pretty damn accurate, and shouldnt be going down at stoplights and launches, even if you were flooring it

actually i'l have to agree with the other dude, gas tank pressure will vary need position also if you are pulling too much force i.e making a wide turn on an interstate ramp at high speeds where u feel the g's the needed will tend to move also if ur car is inclined or in a declined position it will also vary. Like someone before me said, the only real way to measure is fill up and count the miles you drive until Empty light turns on then divide the amount of miles by the gallons u put in and thats how u get most accurate read.

Also depends on what gas you put.

98% of the time I use Shell VPOWER, on a road trip I recall using Amoco and Mobil but other than that I'm assuming the fluctuating weather of Chicago has something to do with it maybe?

Mine is pretty much the same. I wish it was mor accurate i never know how many more miles i can go. two days ago i was on ---- when i got in the car and drove 45 miles home from a meeting. Then the next day drove 10 miles to the gas station. That was 50 miles after the light came on. I never pay attention to how many miles it takes to get to the first quarter though.
