Some things I consider...

Stops I am more likely than not to give a warning:

-Speeding <15mph
-Non-critical Equipment violations
-Registration & license expired <30 days
-Turn signal violations (which didn't cause an accident or near miss)

I will probably still stop someone for violating one of the above, but usually done as a pretext for something else (narcotics interdiction, etc.).

Stop where I rarely give warnings:

-Insurance violations
-Suspended/revoked licenses
-Suspended/revoked registrations
-Disabled parking violations
-Fail to yield to peds in x-walk violations
-Child seat violations
-Open container violations,
-Etc., etc.

Attitude of the driver (and previous contact history) plays an important role in determining outcome.

right on. that seems like how any straight headed cop should think - you crack down on the things that are a big deal and there is a chance you'll let em go on the things that are not a big deal..

how long do you guys keep records on folks anyways? if you let someone I imagine that stays on record (for how long I don't know?) just so the next cop that pulls em over can see that they've been warned before. I was warned once when I was 18 and again when I was 23, both on stupid minor speeding things, just curious if he was able to see I was warned in the past.

if you've seen that someone was warned in the past, do you write them a ticket, or do you take in to account how long it has been since the warning etc?

We maintain information in our CAD indefinitely. My officers can see warnings issued by other others department-wide only. We cannot see warnings issued by other agencies. Arrests/convictions are another story.

Length of time since last warning/arrest/ciation and number of similar events.

Anytime.

I once got a warning for passing someone too fast (I did, too. They were going 10 under and I took the only opening I could find...right in front of a cop). He said he was just going to warn me because he understood why I did it. Then he said my record would be appended so that the next cop would not only issue me a ticket for whatever violation I made, but also issue me the ticket I could have gotten from this violation. Is that at all possible?

Sure is... the local sherrifs do that out here in SD too. If you get another ticket from a sheriff within 6 months of the original warning, then you get double whammied! Highway patrol tickets don't count with the county tockets though, but I think that's fair - it's nice that they give you one freebie at least!

I know. They upped the Indy speed limit to 70 on the interstate. It's always 55 here. Kills me. People still driver 70 though so I always feel on the verge of death.

Every time I've been pulled over, I deserved to be pulled over.

The least deserving, was one night on a road that the car crowds frequent (probably why I didn't just get a warning)... I made a U-turn in a place that had a sign (It was night time and I completely didn't see it, plus I was following my friend) that had days/hours that u-turns were permitted. Really retarded... like I'm expected to process what day/time u-turns are permitted, what day/time it actually is, all on a sign that's hard to see until you're already committed to the U-turn and there is nowhere else to go.. the cops that pulled us over were real jerks too.

I've been pulled over doing 150mph (cop said he was doing 120 and I was still pulling away). Some reject of society in a full size extended cab truck decided to road rage on me for no reason at 3am on a desolate interstate in the middle of nowhere. I eventually had enough and decided to get away from the guy. The cop was pretty cool and wrote the ticket for 96 in a 70 (the speed limit was actually 65) instead of taking me to jail and towing the car. I told him what happened and that my life was being jeopardized by some idiot and I did what I felt was necessary. He told me I should have exited the interstate, but that's easy to say when you have a badge and a gun and you don't have some maniac trying to run you off the road.

Another time I just got a warning. It was kinda strange. It was before I had the newer licenses when most everyone had the newer version (mine was the old school type license). He made me get in his car, and there was a video camera right in my face with my ugly mug up on a screen. He acted like he had no intention of giving me a ticket.

Cops appreciate the following when they catch you doing something you shouldn't:
Pull over in a safe place.
Turn off your car.
Don't go digging around for your license and registration before they get to your car.
If it's dark turn your interior light on.
Put both hands up on the steering wheel.
Be respectful. (respect their authori-tay)
Don't lie.
Don't make excuses, and don't try to get out of the ticket.

Escort 8500 with latest software mounted under the rear view mirror hard wired into the cars electrical system keeps the LEO's honest. No pull over but at least 4 confirmed saves in the past two years.

Two saves being painted by LASER and the other two on K and Ka band. Remember -- to detector is only a TOOL. If you do not know how to use it properly, you are destined for a lot of trouble. Do not ever put "blind faith" into any detector.

i find that cops are just like walmart cashiers. sometimes you get a cool one that will just talk to you like a real person. other times you get the one who has had a shitty day and just wants to do thier job with little conversation as possible. and then you get the ones who has had enuf for the day and then you just show up with a worn or missing barcode and then send them or have then wait for you to go get another one with a good barcode and then they just make everything painful and slow. (and sometimes you get a hot one lol)

i dont see cops as a bad thing all they do is keep honest ppl honest. if your going to break the law by speeding or making some crazy insane mod to your car to draw the attentions of the chicka's or fella's dont be surprised when cops look to.. not like you cant have flashing strobe lights and fog around your car while be surrounded by a rockband or what have you all the time and attract everyones attention except cops. if you dont want the cops to notice you keep your junk stock or keep it in the garage.

p.s. if your driving and you see a cop and tap the brakes or get that butterfly feeling and wonderment of getting pulled over your probally wrong and deserve getting hooked up with a ticket. i look at it this way:

"If im speeding by the time i see the cop he has seen me and has already made up his mind if he is going to pull me over or not. so why slow down and let him know that i know im doing wrong?" just own up and pay the ticket and if you dont wanna pay one then dont do anything as to warant one.

Oddly enough, the Z is the fastest car I've owned yet the only one I've never had a ticket in. Never even pulled over. And I certainly don't drive conservatively, have been missing my front plate for over a year, my inspection is a month out of date right now, etc.

I'm sure it varies based on region, but if anything I seem to get way more slack in this car than when I drove a Jetta.

i've been pulled over twice in mine and both times one of the first questions was "what do you do." (I'm young have rims racing seats and other things) i tell em digital media design and they say "oooh" i find it funny.

yea that reminds me i had my system way to loud apparently and when the cops walked up on me they wanted to know y i had it so loud. i told them i was trying to impress my passenger. and then they asked if i thought he would be impressed with me getting a 380 dollar ticket. i said i didnt know and he asked if i thought i could afford a 380 dollar ticket. i sighed and looked up sadly and said well thats about half of this car payment so im sure i could if i needed too. he just looked flabbergasted that my payments were 720 a month .. he said thats more than his house payment. and gave me a warning nonetheless. so long story short

loud music+not getting a ticket+embarrassing a cop= win

I have never had a ticket. I obey the laws. Yet, I have had a cop follow me for roughly ten miles. He was a county sheriff. I was nervous as hell, the guy was pretty much riding my *** to get me to speed... I have had cops clearly point a radar gun at my car while I was in a line a traffic on a highway. Its pretty clear that if you drive a nice attractive car, by nature it will attract people; thus also attracting the cops attention.

It's the craziest thing. I've had the Z for around 16 months, I speed everywhere, have illegally dark tint, and I have not even been pulled over in the car. I will fully accept my speeding ticket, when I get it, because I should have gotten plenty by now.

I got more attention in my truck. Proof by my $70 ticket for 1 license plate light bulb being out (the other one worked fine).

In Atlanta, no police attention. I almost feel like I'm invisible (mainly because people merge into my lane).

I ALWAYS get tailgated by cops. Do they do that because they want you to speed up and get out of their way or are they instigating you? I can never figure it out. I always just let them ride my bumper. I figure they can flash their lights if they want me to pull off the road out of their way.
