Maybe it's just me, but my 3rd gear only takes me to 80mph in my '03 Z.

Stock rev limiter.

Do you have an auto or manual? They have a different final gear. Anyway, according to this, you either max out at 94 or 89 mph, depending on your transmission.

On my HR, 3rd goes to over a 100 mph.

It's a 6mt.

Hmmm, that chart doesn't look right for my car. I'm at the very top of 4th when I go through the traps at 101-102mph.

2nd gear also doesn't quite net me 60mph. More like 57-58mph.

The rear end is stock as far as I know...

Holy cow this is turning into a science.

Simply put, whether you are in 3rd upshifting or downshifting at a set speed your RPM's are going to be the same. So drive you car through the gears and pay attention to your RPM relative to your speed. Drive your car enough and it will be second nature which gear you select.

The biggest thing is, don't beat on your car senslessly. Drive it hard but don't do ricer downshifts while cruising down the highway. What I mean by this is when you downshift to take off, downshift and then let the clutch our at a moderate pace, allow the engine RPM's to speed up and then, PUNCH IT! Your transmission and engine will thank you by not grenading itself.

Stock 18" touring wheels, with stock sized NT555s...

My speedometer has been verified accurate by my GPS.

One thing it might be, is that I can't go ALL the way to 6600. The rev limiter seems to hit around 6400.

2nd gear goes to nearly 70mph on the HR, I always drop to third at highway speeds. If i'm going 50mph i'll even drop to second... talk about pinning you back in the seat

I'd throw that sucker in reverse. A lot of torque.

Just read that, and I haven't laughed out loud in a while, but that was funny.

OP, like everyone said, if you're doing a 6-->3, rev-match. All things being equal, 6-->4 is probably better for clutch longevity.

play around and see what gear is the best id say

downshift one gear at a time, but make sure you are rev matching while downshifting

dont want to have a busted transmission
