I've redlined my car every day I've had it... and have no problems whatsoever with the engine. Just keep on changing the oil!

I wish my Z's redline was higher so I could hit 70 in second too. Gearing is the same for all Z's, but my '03's 6600 limiter is ftl in some situations where it just doesn't make sense to upshift for 1 second then downshift to brake. I do want that higher final drive ratio for better acceleration, but then my 2nd gear would be so short.

there really isnt anything wrong with hitting redline as long as you dont pin it there unnecessarily. Obviously you shoudlnt be anywhere near redline if the engine isnt warmed up either. As far as it being beneficial... i doubt it would do anything.

All you other guys make it sound like its a bad thing to rev the motor past 6k rpm. Im sure NONE of you have ever done it because its really "bad" for the motor. Sure, i own a Z just to cruise at low rpm's because the VQ isnt built for revving or spirited driving.

I think the point was missed. Forget the Z.

Let me give you another example.

You have a regular 3 series that is driven by your grandma, who has an automatic, and drives 40 on the highway with her left blinker on.

the car doesn't even know a redline exists because it thinks 4,000 rpms is too fast.

Would it be a good idea to take it on an onramp and wind out second gear till redline?

1) Yes after the engine is warmed up
2) No not pegging it there for 30 seconds, just run it up there then switch to third.

Fine! Yes it can help (in a way). Casual driving can increase the likelyhood that you will have carbon build-up because the engine doesnt get hot enough to sufficiently burn off contaminents that create the build-up.

So redlining it would help get it hot enough to do so. Then again, a nice highway drive would do the same thing and not potentially hurt the engine.

I wouldnt say red line but I remember a couple mechanics telling my mom when I was younger to try and get the car on the highway or above 60mph once a week to keep the engine ""cleaned out"". They went into further detail I just dont remember what it was. I suppose I could see always driving at 2k-3.5k rpm all the time maybe, could, possibly cause a build up in the engine or exhaust system...not sure though.

I dont think its a BAD thing to do at all, i mean redlining! I usually red line once or twice each time i drive but usually 2nd or 3rd gear.
