I know that there are a few responsible 17yr old drivers (lord knows I wasn't), and our disdain doesn't necessarily come from the parents buying them the cars (ok maybe a little bit); but it mostly comes from the dangers of having a car of this nature in the hands of a 16 or 17yr old.

99 Ford Expedition (with big wheels loud audio system and everything yeah that stage) totaled and all my invested money back to my parents cause insurance doesnt cover aftermarket...
2002 C320 Sounds good but the most unreliable car you will ever have and fixing sh*t was a serious pain in the *** and not cheap
2006 350z (graduation present)
Im 18 now and at Clemson on mostly scholarship. The Z was the last gift from my parents and im paying everything else from here on out. Thats college tuition, room and board, food ect. I worked all last summer and earned enough to support myself for the year. Next year im joining the CO-OP program and working half the year and going to school for the rest.
I guess i got a z at 17 but i worked my *** of in high school (no ******** courses all APs junior and senior year) and im pretty happy at where im at now so heres a curveball for the argument.
Flame if you want but thats what im doing.

Started off with a really good car (imo). made possible by child support! the audi was the only one paid for by someone other than me except the civic was *free*.
2003: 1999.5 audi a4 2.8 quattro 32k 5-speed all options
is now for sale with a blown tranny intake and mild brake upgrade 81k
1968 510 coupe never finished it got overwhelmed and sold
89 240sx coupe, got rid of it quick
turn and burn, the 1986 civic hatch SI (not crx) had the sticker on the back when I got it, and the shoe fit
90 240sx coupe. for sale 500 or 1200 with an attarco motor *not installed* will install for 300 and you pay for clutch line/motor mounts
1984 rx7 gsl-se.
2004 350z track. my first big buy then came the credit card and a v-2 kit borla td, koyo, guages, spearco, innovate wideband.
I now see where all my money goes...

1st / 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS - Looked good, but mechanically it was horrible and slow
2nd / 2004 Dodge Neon SRT-4 - Amazing car, kinda sad I got rid of her. Didnt like the front wheel drive that much, but it was quick w/ that stage 2
3rd / 2006 Nissan 350Z Enthusiast - Awesome car. Trying to save to fix her up.
I'm now 20 and am proud to say i pay everything on my 350. W/ my eclipse my parents and I made a deal that if i made straight A's that they would buy me a nice car. Once I got tired of it breaking down on me all the time, I decided to buy something quicker and nicer so i had to get a job. After a year in college, i joined the Air Force to help pay for my car. Kinda shows how much i love my cars I had no problems with the srt, except that people jus saw it as a "neon". i wanted to get a little more flare, so i stepped it up w/ my nissan and i absolutely love it!

'71 nova (rebuilt w/ my dad) - my dad bought it for $1500, i've probably put $10k in it since, and he put in $5k or so.
'86 celica gt (that was a f***ing fun POS!) - passed-down from my older sister.
'86 mazda b2000 pickup (no a/c in Arizona - ouch) - given to my dad, who then gave it to me.
'94 pathfinder xe (had to replace the tranny)
'05 ultra yellow Z
