And M3's are great...right up until their engines blow up.

if you want luxury and performance and reliability, look into Lexus IS350 or ISF (depending on your budget). to be honest, all the IS is toyota with freaking lexus badge on it. (seriously. it is) but that doesn't mean it's crap. and cuz they had that recall, their price dropped a lot. (IS was apart of it since it is a toyota car. only lexus that was on the same recall.)

You changed your oil 15 times over 18k miles and two years?

May I ask why?

Don't mean to threadjack, just curious

I just bought my 350z recently and I was in the same situation choosing between a 2003 350z or an 2003 E46 M3. The M3 was about $5k more but fairly close in pricing. Both are great cars, but if you plan to get an M3, be prepared for a much more expensive maintenance and repair cost. If any part fails, it's an arm and/or leg to replace...

I love both cars, but if money wasn't an issue, I would go for the M3. Actually if money wasn't an issue, I'd be driving an Murcielago.

They can be fun to drive, but their history of blowing engines is notorious.
The 328's are slow. The 335's are decently quick stock (300hp and 300 trq--the 300trq. available at 1800 rpms). Those engines are underrated too. 1/4 mile in 13.3 seconds at 105.9 mph stock.

The 335is comes with slightly more power too and have a limited overboost function when you wot.

Add a simple chip and downpipe and you are at 400/400 with nice torque available at a low rpm. See Dinan. So, on the E90 turbo cars, tuning/modding is not really that expensive, especially when you consider the gains. I do agree that the M cars and NA models are more expensive to mod. But I would leave a E92 M3 in stock form personally, well enough for me.

The HPFP issues might be a worry if they are not worked out, not sure if the new part number replacements go bad or not.

I wouldn't consider a E46 M3 personally, given its age.

German made vehicles have become crap. Due to mostly the cutting costs for down graded components. The worst things are all the electronics that they all have in them now. Its not like it used to be with just a nice motor tranny body and very few electronics. owning an 87 BMW was the BEST of the BEST. Still till this day that car has made me understand what it meant to be saying "ultimate driving machine". Now i just want to laugh at the BMW's still stating that.

Keep the Z if you want a reliable vehicle. Just take care of it. You won't regret that.

Even them guys who want Vettes......they rattle like no other.

No joke, best vehicles i recommend to customers who are looking are in this order
1. Toyota/lexus
2. Honda/acura
3. Nissan/infinite

THATS IT! Everything else is Garbage!!!!!!
Japanese cars are generally viewed as being reliable, but they are by no means infallible. The OC issues on the VQ's with failures and replacements come to mind and Toyota/Lexus gas pedal/brake issues causing accidents. I would personally rank the Honda/Toyota above the Toyota/Lexus for reliability.

The Japanese cars should be less expensive to maintain long term. If planning to keep a BMW/Audi long term, an extended warranty and a maintenance plan would likely be goog ideas otherwise regular maintenance and a good independent shop would be key. Preventative maintanance is key in the long life of those cars.

Everything else is garbage besides toyota, honda, and nissan? lol, I wouldn't agree with that statement

^ Personally i do not believe that "gas pedal" mumbo Jumbo. None of my customers who have all those year made Toyota's have any issues. And that problem is by no means in any of the Lexus vehicles regardless. Was strictly a Toyota vehicle named problem. So some guy wanted to smash or run over his wife and he blamed it on the "gas pedal" lol.......Now everyone out there is looking to get PAID! Besides although it is a JAP designed vehicle if you read into the fine print only the "American" made in Kentucky vehicles had this issue, not the ones made and shipped from Japan.

It is like the Audi issue back in the day. One guy has a bad day at work claims bankruptcy and decides to smash his car into everything that day. What did he do? Blamed it on Audi's poor gas pedal/ brake pedal system. Then the MOOCHERS came out and everyone who had an Audi started claiming issues.

As far as my little list, agree or don't. I work on the vehicle daily and see the differences in design and craftsmanship. Best example i can tel you as of right now is Mercedes and even newer BMW's NOT having oil dipsticks.....what a stupid design that is. Relying on the level sensor of a computer to show you how much oil is in the pan. When it comes to that particular Fluid in my eyes that is a bad way to cut costs making it seem easier for the "customer" to see how much oil he has when it is nearly impossible for the Avg Joe to even change the oil to boot. Take that one to the bank!

I love threads like this. Ur at my350z.com all the people here love there 350's of course were gonna say keep the 350. If u go over to the BMW forums I'm sure everyone will say dump that 350 and get a BMW?? Use ur brain. Why not get the 2011 Honda accord v6 it's 271hp and rides real smooth and maintiance is cheap. Mt GF has one and it's fun to drive. With the BMW ur paying un extra 5,000 for a couple of emblems.. And some gadgets u will never use..

I hate the BMW grill. Reminds me of two nostrils. Want to take my thumb and forefinger and pinch and twist!

BMW's can be reliable cars, if you maintain them well, but that goes with any car. My mom had a BMW 325xi from 01-07, she bought it brand new and hit 199,900miles in 2007 before someone rear ended her. Her clutch didn't go out until 160,000miles, the rear diff was replaced at 177,000miles due to an object hitting it, and the ignition coils started going out after 190,000miles. If she didn't have that accident I bet the car would be at or close to 300,000miles today.

+1... I worked at a toyota dealership when that was going on... so many people called about cars from the early 90's with the same issue... we charged them 90 bucks for a throttle body cleaning, the extra 30-40 bucks was their stupid tax.
