Default Depreciation on '03s sucks...

After four months of Z ness and about 3K in mods, the actual value of the car today makes it financially unreasonable to sell at this point in time. I will be holding on to this vehicle until lease term so I can opt out on a residual that should be too high at the end of term. Life is not so bad; getting stuck with driving the Z for 2+ more years.

Getting out of a lease before the end of the lease term is almost always a really bad financial move. Your better off selling the car stock and selling the mods on ebay.

Yea, there could be worse things than being "stuck" with the Z. Good luck.

Yeah, being a chronic car junkie, I am accustomed to taking a bath on early termination lease deals. I guess I have been playing around with German cars for too long. Historically, I have taken a tolerable hit; but the Z's real time market value has made walking out of this deal intolerable. 1st time for everything.

Since when do you buy a car for it to retain its value?

Didn't we just have this thread?!? This forum feels like Groundhog day. Are you gonna ask what the differences are between an 03 and an 04 next?

Leasing a car has everything to do with residual values and real world depreciation r/t early trade in. I don't like buying depreciation, it is bad enough having to rent it.

I just read that the 2003 350z has the highest projected resale value for all sportscars for the next 5 years.

Where did you read that? It is quite easy to research. Check the residuals against MSRP, turn it into a percentage; then cross reference trade in values vs. actual trade in dollars and turn that into a percentage. Subtract the 1st percentage from the second and that should give you real world resale value. Sometimes car companies will float residuals to make the product seem more dollar worthy or cut the money factor to move inventory to hype sales volurme. The source you quoted may have kept the market research limited to Japanese cars. Throw in Porsche, Mercedes, and BMW and it is no contest.

No it did include all brands but it was broken into categories like sports cars, luxury, SUV. It was on AOL in the news section i believe. The point of the article was about how Japanese SUV's now have a better resale against american SUV's. But they included all of the other categories and low and behold Sports Car.... Nissan 350Z(japan). I don't know what they sourced their info from but it did say that it was a projection for 2003 models in 2008 i believe.

It is still 2003 and '03 350 Z depreciation sucks. I wonder if it will somehow spike by 2008.

Thumbs down

What a stupid statement regarding depreciation.

If you paid above MSRP maybe depreciation doesn't look so good; however, unless you want to sell the thing now it is to early to tell. That obviously raises the question of why you bought the car in the first place.

No one knows what the Z will sell for in a few years, but my hunch is it will be better then most, although I never viewed buying a car as an investment.

Perhaps you should consider a Honda Civic.

I read the same article in the Wall Street Journal, the 03Z has the best resale value of all sports cars. Mitsu Eclipse is the worst. Be thankfull. The Mitsu has about 33% lower projected resale after 3 years based on the same purchase price.

Not too smart to sell the car after only a year, but after 5 years I also think the car will have a really good resale value... after 10years also..

i say this because look at supra's and 300zx's I think they have a good value now after 5-10 years.

correct me if im wrong...
