This might be a dumb question but I'm assuming the number that flashes on the DTE reading means distance in miles till empty. If so, why does my car flash "------" when according to the posts above, I still have like 3 gallons, or approx 60miles, loft in my tank????

Because the computer doesn't want to assume too much about the driving conditions. Who knows but that you might be forced to use that up all of a sudden? Or the gas station that used to be 58 miles away has closed down so that you can't refuel for another 100 miles?

 

also remember that your gas milage will increase once your engine is broken in. after 5000-8000 miles, you will notice an increase in mileage.

i ran a 2003 maxima out of gas once (well it was sputtering as i pulled into a gas tank) did 75 miles after the E light came on and about 10 miles after it said DTE=0 (this was highway driving too)

 

i have a similar problem...i average 21 to 23 miles per gallon. But for the past few fillups my computer reads anywhere between 360 to 315 dte. !!! When the car was new, it would usually read between 380 and low 400s...whats up with this?

Oil changes, air filters, and bird droppings have all been cleaned frequently, so these shouldn't be the reason for less mileage.

Each time, i completely fill up only after it says around 20 dte.
