If the OP had the license plate of the trailer, given 5 out of the 6 characters, and if he knows exactly which position the character is missing, then you only really have 36 record pulls. 26 alpha and 0-9. And given it is a TX license plate (6 characters total = older plates, newer plates have 7 character length), a lot of the info is already narrowed down. I honestly do not think it takes very much effort to query 36 attempts in worst case scenario.

Now if the OP only caught 5 out of the 6 characters but he doesn't know which position of the plate is certain, like ?XXXXX, X?XXXX, XX?XXX etc... then he would be out of luck.
