Default Clueless Z driver.

A guy in a stock Z was in traffic with me- it looked like he had just bought the car by the temp tags. This is how the conversation goes. Pretty much word for word.

Me: Nice Z, you like it so far?
Him: Love it! Is yours the twin turbo edition?
Me: No.....is yours?
Him: Nah. Well is yours a 4 or 6 cylinder?
Me: Uh....6.
Him (as light is close to turning green): Wanna play?
Me: I'm alright man, have a good one.

I swear by all of this. It sounds too ridiculous to be true. He looked to be about my age, 23 or so. I was literally speechless. I'd maybe let it slide for somebody less familiar with cars or a non Z owner.....but for a guy that just bought a 350Z? To know that little about his own car was amazing to me. Anybody have similar experiences?

Your story is not unusual.
At 23,you may think that MOST guys know about cars.Especially the
one they drive.
Not so.
Thats why I hear late model cars, valves rattling etc, everyday. Some
people are just clueless when it comes to regular maintenance.
You should have asked him if he knew how to open the hood...
This uneducation about motor vehicles is not just for the young.
I'm a Top Gear regular.During interviews with "celebrities" that
shell out big bucks for million $ supercars, hardly any know anything about them!
Few even drive e'm.
Bottom line, the amount of people that see a "car" as just something to take them
from A TO B is rapidly rising along with the sales of iPhones.

Tray: Yeah, some of that is ridiculous!

JCity: I would completely agree- it's sort of disappointing coming from a guy that spent 3 months looking at cars trying to find the perfect sports car. I just imagine him going into the used car dealership and saying "this one looks fast and pretty, I'll take it". I'm not claiming to know much at all about how motors work or how to do the major maintenance myself....but 5 minutes on Wikipedia or Google could have told him enough about that car to have a stoplight conversation about it haha.

Angry These are both true stories...

I called about a car add in the local paper. A woman picks up the phone and I ask her if she is the one with the car for sale. She replies that she is but it’s really not hers it’s her husband’s and he is not currently at home. I replied that I could call back if that is OK but all I really wanted to know was what kind of engine it had. She replied, Oh, it’s a red one……….

Myself and my brother were driving down the road near his Atlanta, GA home in his fairly new C6 when a lady pulls up beside us in another C6. Myself and my brother, of course both notice and wave, no response. Down the road we both pull into the same gasoline station and my brother pulls up along side the lady in the C6 we just saw down the road. My brother politely starts a conversation with her and says he likes her car and wondered if she had seen us wave at her down the road. She says that she did but did not know us and did not acknowledge our wave. My brother goes on to tell her that usually people in Corvettes wave at one another just as a courtesy as to say, “hey nice vette” to which she immediately replies, “what’s a corvette”?????

I recently decided that I'm done flashing high beams or giving thumbs up to other Z drivers unless its visibly and tastefully modded. Originally I would give a thumbs up to everyone except for completely riced out Z's. I'm talking about cheap wheels that fit terrible, stick on crap, etc. Too many times though Z owners ignore the thumbs up and pretend they don't notice me when I'm driving right next to them. This is almost always stock Z owners. I've found that most people with stock Zs aren't into cars enough to know that giving a thumbs up to drivers of the same car is a common thing to do.

But maybe (insert conspiracy keanu) other drivers do see me, but they think my car is too ricey for a thumbs up.

Not everyone who buys a 350Z buys it because it is a 350Z. Some folks just like the lines or something else about the car and are not "enthusiasts" by any stretch of the imagination. I too have given up on the wave or flashing the lights at every Z I see - I will check it out and see if there is any return recognition but more and more, there is none, even if I am right next to them. And to be honest, doesn't bother me in the least.

why does that upset you? So many people on here get offended by idiots driving Z's. Its an affordable sports car, you all are not in a higher echelon. If you want a car that only serious people drive you have to get a LFA. For any other car you're not going to stop idiots from driving them (Im sure a couple of idiots even drive the lfa).

Also, how much you know about cars has absolutely nothing to do with age. Sure an average 23 year old doesnt know jack. Regardless its a stereotype. And simpletons play into stereotypes because its easy.

Some guy drove by me in his nismo, by the time i acknowledged his wave he had already passed by and it was to late to wave back.......... my car is stock but i hope he doesn't think that way of me I love my Z!

to be fair... I'd rather like the driver next to me paying attention to what is ahead of them than paying attention on me who is driving another car next to them.... well, unless they are trying to switch lane into me...

That's funny. He must bought it used and the sales guy told him this car has different engine version like hyundai genesis coupe.

It amazes me that people will purchase a vehicle without doing any research beforehand.

This.

How do you not even know what kind of engine is in the car?
