Is the Manual Transmission dead? … MT as a Dinosaur?
My boss had a MT F430, i couldn't believe it. I must have walked past the car atleast a dozen times before i actually looked in to see the tall shifter and exposed gates. I always assumed the 360s were the last of the MT ferraris. Boss said he didn't care that his was most likely slower, he just loved driving the car and part of the experience was shifting through the gears. In my mind he is a true enthusiast.
my first car was auto. hated it. I am so happy to be in a manual now. The only thing I don't like is worrying about wearing the clutch. I'm sure its fine but in the auto I never had to think about it.
Car companys are starting to prove the notion that a computer can shift faster than a human can, and if its something a computer can do better than a human, especially in sports, most likely human aspect will be shifted out. Human reaction time is only so fast and in motorsports a 1 second distraction like a missed shift or wrong gear choice can lose a race.
I'd rather be connected with what's going on around me, not distracted by fiddling with the transmission and clutch.
It's really rare for a transmission or clutch to crash into someone, especially their own transmission and clutch.

I have never seen so many contradictions in one place before.
Sports cars are not trucks, they are not sedans, and they definitely not economical commuter appliances.
When I hear a true automatic transmission sports car (like in 350z's, RX-8's, Miatas, and Supras*), images of hairdressers chatting to their boyfriends on their hello kitty iPhone come to mind as to who is most likely piloting that car.
Edit: DSG's can be awesome, PDK, Dual Clutch, etc etc, as long as it isnt some slushbox, I'm OK with it.
*Automatic streetcar Supras can be fast as all get out though. I usually wait to see if i can smell exhaust before i pass judgment.

This is what I'm seeing in this thread so far...
MT guys hate on true automatics but it's completely fine to love the DSG.
People argue the fact that there's 'no interaction' with an AT, yet they love the DSG.
People relate or 'vision' automatics with women... lol, really?
To me, no clutch and shifter = automatic. Doesn't matter whether the DSG is technically not an auto etc etc. Where's the interaction that MT guys always argue about? The 'real men drive 3 pedals' (lol).
Also the fact that these slushboxes have run great times on the track. Boosting an auto Z, I'm sure is another story. So, what's so 'barbie' about it?
Contradictions galore? Just my .2

I agree with you, transmission has no effect on driving ability, and if your a terrible driver with either transmission, your just a terrible driver, IMO best thing to put in a car is someone with extreme driving experience and skills, after all a car is just a tool

DSG driven normally as an auto, what ever. Kinda lame, but i would probably do it when driving around like a sane person.
Auto car, slushbox. Great for drag racing. Boosted auto Z for the street, still limp wristed unless you are handicapped. Boosted auto Z built for the strip, no problem.
