Default Is the Manual Transmission dead? … MT as a Dinosaur?

I prefer pressing a clutch pedal with my foot and operating a shift-lever. But, this scenario is definitely going away. AT’s are more popular than MT’s, and even manual shifting is evolving to paddles with automatic clutch assemblies.

What is your preference: (AT) Automatic Transmission or (MT)Manual Transmission?

I like the MT for every type of driving, street or track. But driving a 'AT' car like a GT-R or Ferrari 458 at the track has me convinced those transmissions work really good.

They are not really an Auto. They are DSG , auto would be the typical slushbox that is installed in the Barbie version of the Z.

Gotcha, that is my weak point when it comes to cars, the transmission. So the PDK is in the same group also?

Love the MT and I feel it will always have its place with the enthusiasts. That said, over the pass few years manufactures have started to move away from the MT in favor of automated manual's like DSG's and DCT's. I was both surprised and saddened when I found out that the new Porsche GT3 will only be available with the PDK gearbox and not a standard MT. I guess its only a matter of time before the MT as we know and love, becomes a thing of the pass.

Looks like it, its a dual clutch box. Basically a computer controlled sequential box.

I like both.

...but I sorta picture the DSG being the only transmission in the future. Both traditional manuals and autos will die

Of course they're a hell of a lot more expensive now but I think they'll slowly be incorporated into everyday cars as the DSG broadens.

Anyone else think the same will happen?

New viper still only comes in manual, I think as long as there is at least a small demand for manuals they will stay -the technolgoy is there, why not?

What may happen is that the manual will become an option, sort of like the automatic was early on, that we will have to pay money to add in.

Lets not forget that Porsche put out the 7 speed manual and is currently working on further manual transmission upgrades.

Personally I will always drive a manual, unless you race for competition the DSG is not needed.

i dont think it will die, having a clutch and manually shifting allows the driver to change characteristics in the handling that you would not be able to do in auto/smg etc. ex: Le clutch kick.

The truth of the matter is that the manual transmission will be around forever. in foreign markets manuals reign supreme due to the fact that the production cost is lost and so is maintenance. In terms of high dollar sports cars? I could see the manual tranny disappearing. Most highly tuned automobiles that are designed to be fast from the factory want good numbers on the track, seeing as they sell cars when they go faster around the ring.

everyday economy cars will always be cheaper to get with a manual. like I said before. cheaper to build. cheaper to maintain.

I prefer a manual in my sports cars, but an auto in the sedan.

Let's be honest, MT's are on the way out. So are AT's. Cars that don't drive themselves are on the way out.
