Default When is modding a waste of money?

At what point do you guys feel like modding becomes a waste? From the very start? After a certain threshold?

We all know that our cars depreciate over time and modding them effects their value even more...but we do it because we love the hobby.

I'm interested to hear everyone's input because I've been tossing around this thought in my head for some time.

When you don't like the mods you do.

As long as they make you happy the mod is always worth the money.

Yeah that's true...it's just an expensive way to make yourself happy haha. It'd be much more cost effective to collect stamps or some ****

Would you be happy if you collected stamps? I know I wouldn't. I don't drive to the store or work, get out of my car, start to walk away and turn around to look at my stamp book....

Isn't this always the way it ends up? Regardless of whether or not you're attached to the car and never plan to sell it, eventually it'll be driven into the ground or a financial mishap will force you to part with it.

Interesting question. However,as many answers as there are guys that mod.
People mod their cars to give the car individualarity. Its a passion of sorts to many.
With some of us,we are never done.We tire of one area like wheels, change e'm.
Mods are never a waste IMO,they are fun. Some make us create, figure out...
I could offer an opinion based on what I'VE done.Does'nt mean a thing.
But,here goes.
Get a plan. What you want to do.What you want your car to be.Start with the priorities.
Don't throw parts at your car. You'll wind up with things that won't match.Spend tons of
money.Hate to say it,I'm done.Yes,my Z is where I wanted it to be.Took me 4 yrs.
I'd just have to redo something I've already done to do more.
Actually, looking back, been in the same situation with every mod-worthy car I've owned.
Maybe its time to start over.
With another car.

It's not "always", more like "often"

Ha that's what I tell people...

"Why would you spend that much on that? blah blah blah"

OK. Let me take the same amount and go buy some heroin instead.

It is a personal opinion. For me, it would be when the total invested COULD HAVE bought me a new (desirable) Porsche, BMW, or other car of my liking. It might be justified because of quality, performance, or other features.

I think it comes down to how you treat your car. Do you plan to run it into the ground? Or you are the type of car buyer that likes to change cars a lot? We all know that aftermarket car mods add minimal or no value to a car's resale value. If u are planning for the long haul, then spending money on mods shouldn't feel like a drag.

I have been bouncing around the same idea. Our 08 350z is still stock after 1.5 years of ownership.

It's a waste of money when you aren't enjoying the mods anymore

I agree with JCity and JCat. As for my opinion, there is no specific amount. It depends on what you want the vehicle to be. I wanted a autoX / weekend track toy. I bought my 04 Z for $12k 4 years ago. I have put $13k in it. Many would say spending more on it than it cost is a waste. However I'm planning on dropping another $10 k on it. For $35k I will have a boosted Z with built suspension, BBK, track wheels and race seats. For $35 k I will out perform many sports cars that cost 50k and I don't own a stock car. Of course there are guys that have $100 invested in their Z and for me that's a waste. I would rather own a nearly stock GTR than the baddest Z. So it's all about what you want in the end.

Modding your car is retarded and the biggest waste of money.
at times I wish I would have never gotten into the scene and just be fine driving an accord or something.

..... But yet here I am, getting an osiris tune tomorrow lol
I could have saved so much being young and investing the money i put into my car in an effective way...but............yeah... hah

That's where I'm at right now. I SHOULD be driving an econobox and saving my money for my future (lolwutzdat). Boring cars just aren't my cup of tea.

The biggest thing about being a car enthusiast is the part that no one understands. It's about the experience and the enjoyment from driving, personalizing and maintaining something that means a lot to you. Most people just look at cars as a means of transportation...nothing else.
