Default Semi vs Z

Ok, so not quite what you are thinking, but I've had a pretty interesting 2 weeks.
----STORY----

I was in the left lane and semi was in the right. The road slows from 65mph to 50mph and goes over a set of railroad tracks. There was a school bus stopped at the railroad tracks, doing the stop/look/listen BS. The semi tried to stop, but couldn't do so in time. Without seeing me next to him, he began to change lanes....I tried braking and hitting the curbed median to my left to scrub off speed, since I was mid-trailer, doing anything to at least avoid the trailers tires. Although a success in that sense, I was about 3ft short of avoiding everything. And went for about a 150 yard ride as he drug me behind him until we came to a stop.

Car is currently awaiting parts to be fixed. I was kind-of hoping for a total loss, because I would've made money on the deal, but being a prior salvage title car, probably helped their decision.

Thankfully nobody was hurt.

Wow. I bet you needed a clean pair of pants after that close escape. That semi certainly made a bit of a mess of your Z, it looks like it's been attacked by a tin opener. I'm glad you got out of it safely. I'm surprised that they've not written it off though.

He said insurance didn't total it.

Kind of shocking.

I'm shocked it's not totaled seeing as how it's a salvage...

Theres no way! Any structural damage like pillars, roof, frame, etc is basically an instant total. Thats weird how they didnt. Glad youre ok though man!

I think you are going to need a new side view mirror.

glad to see nobody was hurt, sucks driving in the snow cause
sometimes there's no way you can come to a stop in time no matter what you try.

That kind of damage looks "totaled" to me. That's a lot of damage.

Wow- I agree with all the other comments here about the amount of damage. Sorry to hear about this shunt, but it's another reason to park your Z during bad weather like that.

I guess the A-pillar is replaceable on these cars....even Courtesy Nissan lists a part (76210M). I was shocked too, don't worry. I had buyers lined up and cars on my list.

But otherwise no real damage. Door still opens and closes fine, fender wasn't touched. It's just a weird turn of events.

And blame the weather? No. I have snow tires and bought this last January. It does great in the weather, and the actually was a nice day out. Just shows no matter how good of a driver you are, there are situations you just can't avoid.

Um wtf dude that's a total, if you want it to be. Ask to talk to the adjuster's manager as you are afraid the structural integrity is compromised. Are you going through your insurance or was the semi considered at fault? You can always go through your own policy and see if they give you a total, after which they will subrogate against the semi's policy for your deductible.

The external A-pillar you referenced is just plastic trim, but if the inner metal pillar has any creases in it, it will never be as strong as original, and that's a major safety issue. If the metal is even scratched, I'd escalate this matter until you find someone in claims to see this is a problem.

^^ Agreed. A damaged A-Pillar is difficult to repair so that it meets specification, and it’s even more difficult determining if the repair makes the car safe.

Some States allow recertification for cars with a salvage title, but the car’s value is always compromised.

It’s unusual for this situation to allow a repair because:

- The A-Pillar is damaged.
- Sheet metal is ripped open.
- The car has a previous salvage title.

Thanks everyone. I contacted MY insurance company and am going to see if I can get a 2nd opinion asap. Their insurance company has been very great through this whole thing as well, but I've never had to deal with something like this, so I'm glad I got some information to go with.

But here's the parts on Courtesy Nissan's site

How many miles are on it? Maybe that is the determining factor?
