Bribed
Salesperson told me when i bought the car that if i bring my survey in to him and mark it all excellent he would buy me a tank of gas. Uh, excuse me a**hole i just bought a $35000 car i think i can afford a tank of gas. I refuse to do that, is it that hard for a salesperson to do a good job? Well anyway, when i bought the car they only had one key remote for my car so they had to order the other one. So i called the other day to see if it was in and he got an attitude with me on the phone about the whole survey(how come i haven't brought it by yet). Pathetic, maybe this has been going on for years and people have fallen for it and Nissan thinks their service is perfect...well its bullsh*t and i refuse to lie for someone so they can make a bonus when in reality a monkey could perform their job just as well. Has anyone else had the same offer?
I've heard this before...The best thing to do is note in the survey what the salesperson asked you to do..
IE "COMMENTS: SALES PERSON DAN asked me to return survey all perfect in exchange for a tank of premium, I was disheartened by the bribe etc..."
A good salesperson will just ask you..was there anything that wasnt perfect? What can I do to fix it? I want to make sure you feel comfortable giving us high rankings...how can I make sure thats the case...etc..

When I bought my 01 Sentra SE, the salesman really pushed on the survey too.
In my case, he was super nice guy who gave me a heads up on a rip off at the finance guys desk where they tried to sneak a $399 Security something or another they called it (where they etch the VIN #s on all the glass). He told me where to look for it on the paperwork, act surprised, ask what it was, and then tell the finance guy that I refused to pay for it. The salesman told me they paid $45 to have the glass etched, and he got $25 after the sale. I told the finance guy that I didn't want it: that's what I pay insurance for, so let them steal it. They took it off the contract. The salesman said most people never notice it and just sign, as they're only interested in the monthly payment. Of course the payment changed when they deducted the $399.
Needless to say, I was glad to fill out the survey after that, as the salesman was very straight up about the whole deal and treated me fairly, and even put his job on the line by telling me about that attempted ripoff.
Hey, a free tank of gas is a free tank of gas!

Bluff City? - we bought my 2000 Frontier from there at Invoice (good friends with one of the salesmen)
Landers? (Olive Branch)
Murdock? - we bought our 99.5 Pathfinder from there
Boomer, yeah a full tank of gas is standard upon purchase of a new car. But being that the purchaser wouldnt get the survey until days after the sale, he probably offered ANOTHER free tank of gas.

They are all scum, mine pushed it on me also before I took delivery but after my blow up on the day of delivery (first 350Z they got in) they walk the other way when they see me there.

I thought a free tank of gas was across the board for Nissan? My dealer does it automatically. I am surprised to learn it wasn't true for you. I didn't fill out any survey to get mine either. I usually don't fill them out unless my experience was really good or really bad. A bribe is out of the question.

hey man why dont you show some respect...i happen to sell cars....nissan as a matter of fact.....im not gonna get in the arguement about car people with you ...
but the majority of us car people are honest and hard working people....
yea i ask for a perfect survey...but i explain to my customers i want to earn it and if there is anything they cant answer excellant to to call me and let me know what i need to do to earn the excellant from them......
usually they wont even call
i show i want to earn it from them and it makes them feel better about me...
i also have the hghest survey score for the year in my store....93.8% and so far im 100% this year.......
the survey ist a bonus at my store......they keep half your check from every new car sale and you dont get the other half till the survey comes....no 100 percent no other half of your check....
and alot of stores do that
yhats why alot of salesmen try to bribe the customer....its easier to them then promising to be there for them when there is a problem......
anyways just take it easy on us car guys....we arent all bad....in fact most of us are decent people
Wow, I would bust him up on the survey just for the 'tude.
My dealer mentioned the survey, but in a much cooler way. They said "We like to score all excellent. If there is anything that is not excellent please give us a chance to fix the problem before you fill in the survey.".
I thought that was pretty honest and reasonable. It was sort of like "tweaking" the survey, but in a way that implied they actually wanted to earn it by fixing problems instead of letting me report them. (and I did not feel pressured).
As for your weenie salesman, I agree with the bove poster who said you should just rat him out on the survey. If he pressured you he is also pressuring people who are affraid to push back. If you got the guts to bust him you will be helping other people as well as yourself.

we should link this whole thread when done to the nissan discussion.
My salesman also implied that he does get a "cut" if he gets an excellent on the survey, he deserved it.
The service advisor who did a lousy job and got a call from Nissan North America avoided me after and also just walked out on the job. Watch out if you give the service advisor a "F" because you have to deal with them.

I just have a problem with people that are trying to make money by screwing people, basically trying to make people pay more than they need, and I am sorry but the after sales service by a salesman is laughable, once you sign on the dotted line it is over, they made their commission and unless there is a possibility you might buy another car you are history.
People might feel differently if they could concentrate only on the choosing of the right car and the price rather than the haggle and wondering if they could have gotten the car for less, I wish all would sell like Saturn, it would make the buying experience so much easier.
Interesting thread. My salesman also "pushed" the survey thing with me at the sale closure. He did a good job and I had no compliants about the buying process. I didn't pay much attention at the time, other than he had emphasized the "excellent" category.
Here's the issue with me. In my world "good" service is defined as "acceptable" service. If I don't get acceptable service I will usually go somewhere else - competition is a wonderful concept. To get excellent or outstanding service means service beyond expectations. I've purchased many cars over the years and I've never had more than acceptable service, although I will add that most have been acceptable. What are some things that would perk my antenna for going beyond "just good" service:
- offer a "free" low cost option rather than being pressure sold on something I didn't ask for, especially at the close
- don't swarm me when I stop to window shop during open hours
- courtesy call 6 months after my purchase to inquire on how things are going
- free fill up at my first oil change
- don't put on the dealer's vanity plate holders or decal
- know when I bring my car in for service and inquire on how things are going
- know more about the car than I do
- stay dated on the car issues + and -
- call me about a newly released recall or TSB and let me know your thoughts
- .......
The total cost of these is near zero but if half were ever done the repeat sales from customers willing to pay a small premium would be tremendous.

melissa,
i wouldn't take offense to these kind of posts. a reason why dealers get a bad rep is because atleast 50% of them or more are a-holes. I've been to court once because of it and can think of 2 bad experiences out of 5 with buying cars. My parents, friends, and coworkers have all had problems here in Arizona with bad dealerships.
Half the problem is the dealership holding your bonus depending on the customer returning the survey. Seems unfair. A survey is supposed to be something that's answered truthfully and wether the customer wants to.

Yeah I dont like Landers very much. I went there once to get an oil change on my Frontier when I still had it. The Service Advisor was extremely nice and accomodating, but the salesmen.... OMG one of them sooooo freaked me out, and he was ultra annoying. I told him I was going to call him when I was ready to get a Z. Pshhh...yea right.
