So I have a question, kinda noobish but not as so. Today I've found out that my 03 350z has a problem. While on a level surface with the e brake engaged and the car turned off, my 350z moves when I push it as if the e brake isn't on. What's weird is the 350z can be parked on a hill with the e brake on and in 1st gear and I won't roll down or anything. Need help trying to figure out what's the problem, do I need a new handbrake handle, brake shoes or something else?

Try tightening yours before you spend money. Or do both. It shouldn't be like that unless some one was doing sick drifts yo.

So, it works on hills but not on level ground? Guessing you are missing a few details here.....

 

On hills it works fine and on level ground it does too but, my concern is that it's still able to move while the hand brake is engaged by a push. I have to pull the hand brake all the way up just so it won't roll back while on level ground. Do I need the brake shoes replaced?

 

You're going to need to go in there and inspect them. There's no way we can possibly guess over the internet. Could be a stretched cable, could be bad shoes, could be something else. Check the FSM for your year and troubleshoot. Otherwise, take the car to a mechanic.

Your e brake doesn't work, you need to adjust it or get new pads and adjust it...

You can adjust it through the little rubber plug on your rotors...

Hopefully your aware that your car doesn't roll away because your transmission holds the car in place when parked in gear... But I wouldn't rely on that if your parking on hills.

 

Adjust the pull or you need new pads or both.

Or keep leaving it in gear. That's actually the proper way. Your not supposed to e brake with out it in gear. Even tho you don't have to it's the proper way to park your M/T car.

 

At least with my Z, I have found that it has a weak e-brake. When I adjusted mine to my liking in terms of strength, the brakes were slightly being applied, causing vibration on the highway and destroying my rotors in 1 day.

Easy fix... ALWAYS park in gear.

 

E-brake shoes should NEVER wear out. Unless of course you are using the e-brake to drift or something lol. There is no friction wear on e-brake pads. On the early 350's, like my '03, you can adjust at the handle - remove the coin tray and you will see the adjuster. On newer models use the above method.
