Default Using 2003-2004 350z manual engine in 2005 manual touring.

I'm looking at a 2005 350z touring manual for $2000, very nice and in good shape, but it has a blown head gasket. Bottom line, it needs a new engine. I found a VQ35DE longblock engine in craigslist that says it fits 2003-2004 manual, and 2003-2009 automatic. After looking, I saw the Rev-up version was in the '05 and '06 manual. So can I not use a regular DE in an '05 manual, also whats the difference, and if there is one, could someone let me know.
Thanks.

Why not just fix the head gasket instead of a new engine?

Cylinders got water in them and the oil has water too.

By itself, this doesn't mean the engine is totaled. Might be cheaper and easier to rebuild your shortblock and check the heads, before putting in new headgaskets!

Back to your original question, there's likely going to be some differences in the electronic connections between the rev up and a DE. Depending on what those differences are, it'll throw some CELs after installation. Those will be a problem to resolve.

05 should still be the DE.

But I second the make sure it's actually totaled before buying a new engine.

If you want to sell the engine cheap I might be interested.

The guy that owns it and he said that he took it to Nissan and they told him to just get a new engine... so would the DE work if I buy it out of a car that originally was using it with and automatic?

VQ35DE = 2003 to 2005(Except Anniversary Edition)

VQ35DE Rev- Up = 2005(Anniversary Edition) to 2006

VQ35HR = 2007 to 2009

- Yes, you can use the DE from the earlier Z and put it in that 2005 Touring Manual.

So if I were to get an engine out of a car that originally used and automatic, could I just throw it into a manual?

Yeah. As long as the donor and the receiver share that same engine type.

Save your $2000, save for a while longer, and get a car that runs. This car you're thinking about buying has money pit written all over it.

Well I want to do this so I can use it for my daily driver, and maybe learn a few things here and there because I’m not the most mechanically inclined person out there so I’m going to get help from my dad, but if you think buying a nicer one with a running engine is the best thing to do I think I’ll take your advice. Thanks

If a daily is your goal, as someone who is VERY mechanically inclined.

Yes. Buy a better car. Project cars are called projects for a reason. Because they are never finished.

I agree with Zak and others. You will have a way better time learning how to maintenance a newer working car then trying to fix a broken one. Especially when you are starting out with the wrench.

For a noob, you're asking good questions and being a stand-up guy for understanding that our responses come with good intentions. I seriously hope you're able to find a reasonably-priced 350Z that's in good shape and that you'll be able to enjoy for many years.
