Default Help with new z purchase

so let’s start of with saying I’m new here. Anyways I’m looking at getting a used 350z. I checked out a 2003 350z touring with 46000 miles or 75000 kms. Never winter driven. I didn’t drive it yesterday, owner took me for a spin. I’m planning to drive it today and most likely buy it. Selling for around 5500. Much cheaper then the other Zs. The huge price drop worries me somewhat. Anyways, what should I look out for on these cars? I’m worried about the 3rd gear grind, although I never heard it while the car was driving yesterday. Should I avoid an 03 all together? Money isn’t an issue, I’m willing to spend much more for a solid car. But for 5500 I figured it’s a steal. Any insight is appreciated.

Sounds like a good deal.

Might be rebuilt, or speedo swapped but for $5500 who cares.

Some people have trouble with 3rd gear synchros. Make sure that it is shifting into all the gears without trouble. Check out the front tires, bad alignment makes the inside of the tires feather, uneven wear on the inside blocks.

It’s an active status no accidents. I believe him on the 75k kms. Our summers arent long here. Anyways the cars not immaculate but it’s in pretty good shape for the year.

I would look for fluid leaks in/around the engine bay.

If you are really worried about it I'd take it to a 3rd party mechanic and spend a few hundred dollars and get their opinion.

Thanks DK - every. single. time...take it to a 3rd party / independent nissan/foreign auto mechanic that sees cars everyday of the week...well worth the $200-$300 they'll charge you.

and if you already have a steady mechanic you visit regularly, they'll probably do it for free!!

Yeah- I know people get tired of me saying it, but paying a qualified tech to do a mechanical assessment is always worthwhile. Particularly if it's a Nissan tech who has had some factory training and some years working on Z33s, they can spot things that might be missed. As for relying on the "experts at the 350Z forum", there's only so much any of us can do from behind a keyboard.
