Default potenza RE040 in rain

Hi Folks,

It has been raining pretty heavily in the bay area. I'm noticing how bad the car (has 10.5K miles) behaves on wet roads; especially on newly laid/renovated highways. It's normal for my car to sway a foot (2 ft sometimes) sideways when I'm going at 55-60 mph (under the speed limit). Is it the tires or is it a combination of the tires and the fact that they feather so easily? I'm due at the dealership next week to have them "look" at it.

My good 'ol 94 integra GSR with 8 month old Good year eagles drives straight as an arrow in inches of rain.

thanks

Goodyear Wins With Eagle F1 Tire
Goodyear's first "world tire" has racked up a couple wins with a leading tire mail-order service.

June 24, 2003 - Distributor Tire Rack listed the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3 radial atop its Max Performance tire survey, with customers rating the tire on its traction, cornering stability, steering response, ride comfort and willingness to buy again.

Eagle F1 scored a 9.4 out of 10 points in the repurchase category. No other tire scored more than 8.6. Tire Rack customers said they had traveled 335,032 miles on Goodyear's newest ultra-performance tire.

Tire Rack officials also rated Goodyear's tire highly in a separate competition against Bridgestone and Michelin tires. Although competitive on dry pavement, neither tire could match the lap times of the Eagle F1 GS D3 on a wet track, Tire Rack experts said.

Bob Toth, Goodyear marketing manager for auto tires, said Eagle F1's ultra-performance showing "delivers a halo effect on the entire Goodyear Eagle tire lineup. Customers' positive feelings for Eagle F1 definitely trickle down to Eagle F1 Supercar, Eagle F1 GS, Eagle HP Ultra Plus, Eagle RS-A, Eagle LS and Eagle GT II tires."

Eagle F1 GS D3 tires were introduced in Europe a year before becoming available in the United States; today, the tires are manufactured on both continents. The tire features OneTred design for maximum response and virtual rib technology for maximum wet traction, Toth added.

Mounted on 2001 Lexus IS300 sports sedans, Eagle F1 got Tire Rack's attention on wet pavement. "Eagle F1 GS D3 tires provided predictable handling and enough grip to run the fastest average lap times of the three tires in the test, confirming that the Eagle F1 GS D3 is the most competitive Goodyear tire we've tested to date and that it earned its Max Performance category position," Tire Rack officials said.

Toth said Tire Rack's findings mirror Eagle F1's performance in German and British automotive magazines. They, too, noticed the difference in tire brands.

14 November 2003 MEDIA RELEASE

AWARDS GALORE FOR GOODYEAR EAGLE F1

One of Goodyear’s top tyres, the Eagle F1 GS-D3 is the talk of the tyre industry after receiving further acclaim in Europe and the United States.

The Goodyear Eagle F1 recently won a consumer magazine test in America and has just won an award in the toughest proving ground in the automotive industry through the European auto magazine, Tyre Test.

This praise follows on from its latest kudos in Auto Express, one of Britain’s top enthusiast magazines, which named Eagle F1 the winner of its 2003 tyre test.

Auto Express fitted a set of Goodyear’s Eagle F1 16-inch tyres to a BMW 5 Series and Mercedes C Class and they were "way ahead in the wet and on the pace in the dry."

Pitting Goodyear's ultra-performance tyre against eight others, Auto Express said "the Eagle F1 dominated the competition with wins in wet handling, wet cornering, dry braking, straight aquaplaning and curved aquaplaning."

The publication went on to say that "when the heavens open, the Eagle F1 GS-D3 is definitely the tyre to be on, its curved aquaplaning performance was amazing, with grip maintained long after rivals had given up."

Shortly after the tyre's introduction last year, three German publications and British EVO magazine gave Eagle F1 highest marks in performance.

Germany's Sport Auto magazine reported that the Goodyear tyre "came to a stop more than four meters ahead of its rivals."

Tyre Test magazine said "Eagle F1's showing in Europe is no accident; it is truly Goodyear's first 'world' tyre, and it's being embraced by auto enthusiasts everywhere."

In Australia the international awards are no surprise to Craig Clarke, Goodyear’s national Brand Manager.

"The Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 is a very good tyre and the fact that it is receiving all of this international acclaim doesn’t surprise us," Clarke said.

"The Eagle F1 is also a finalist in the very prestigious Automotive News PACE awards, which recognises innovative products and original equipment suppliers.

"The Eagle F1 is being considered on the basis of its innovative merits and its very positive consumer reaction.

"The feedback from everyone, consumer and industry alike, about the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 has been tremendous, Goodyear is very proud of its products, this one in particular."

The Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 is available nationwide at all Goodyear Auto Service Centres and from other leading tyre specialists.

I wouldnt put 275 on stock rims... they fit very very nicely on my 9.5" rims, no bulge at all. I wouldnt go over 255 personally.

either way. a wider tire will always be worse in rain, some less than others, but none great. like a water ski. the longer and wider it is, the more it can ride over the water. your teg has 4 water skis. your Z has 4 wake boards. it just has to move the water in the center even farther to get it out of the way, so some becomes trapped and lifts the car up.

the brand of tires is only partially responsible. just not fair to compare a measily mid 100's hp fwd(with what Id guess to be 195 maybe 205 tires?) teg to a 287hp rwd Z with 245 stock rubber. it wasnt meant to be the most practical car in inclement weather, I wouldnt call that a flaw in the car, just the nature of the beast.

Default Part of your problem here...

I agree that the RE040s are not the best tires in the rain...but think about this.

1) A tire's rain performance is often dependent on the depth of various grooves.

2) At 10,000 miles you might be near the end of your RE040 tires (I expect mine to last 15k if I'm lucky). Typically as tires go bad, their dry traction stays the same or can even improve while wet traction deteriorates. I have 4k miles on mine, and during heavy rains the car is stable at around 55-60. I know I'll take flack b/c some people might get 20k out of their RE040s...I just have no idea how the hell they do that.

Thanks for all the info! Extremely helpful. Yes, I'm definitely getting 4 new tires on my beloved.

Take care and drive safely.
