2003 Grinding noise from engine bay
Not sure what this noise, was thinking one of the pulleys grinding somehow, but it could just be my eyes/ears playing tricks. Other thought is the timing chain which would be a pain but I haven’t been able to find a timing chain example with this sound. Anyone have a clue on this?
Could be a few things...
1) Idler pulley bearings are shot (There are 3 different idler pulleys, two act as the belt tensioners down at the bottom)
2) Alternator bearings are shot.
3) Power steering pump is really angry.
4) AC compressor is really angry.
Common failure are the pulley bearings (tensioners or the idler near the PS Pump. Note: There is a factory delete option available for the idler pulley mounted next to the PS pump.
Before buying parts, pull off the belts and check all the above components by hand. If any of the pulley bearings make noise and spin loose or freely like a fidget spinner (keeps spinning), that bearing is shot. If the Alternator, PS pump, or AC compressor have any roughness or crunchy feel to them when turned by hand, then said component is shot.
Cheers!
