Question Metalic Popping Sound under car.

K I've done a search, and found nothing. I just bought this car last week. I'm noticing a metallic poping sound every 15-20 seconds. It sounds like metal cooling down almost, but it happens while the car is running, and continues when it's off also. Is this something that I should be concerned with. Anyone else notice this sound when they have their windows rolled down?

I'm already taking the car in this weekend for 2 rattles, might as well mention this too. Please let me know your thoughts.

Is it like a Ting, Ting, type metallic clicking...If it is, it's most likely the exhaust...This happens often with many new cars as the piping heats up...Have them check it out anyways, just my $0.02

Yes that's it exactly, but the tings are occuring every 10-15 seconds, so will this go away then? I'm taking it in this Saturday,

Yup it should go away, but for some new cars it last for a long while...My car still ocassionally does it after hard driving, even after 3 years of driving...

thanks for the info, just trying to make sure that I iron out all the bugs ASAP.

Here's something funny..I thought possibly either my left rear speaker was loose or something else was because since last Tuesday when I bought this, I would hear rattling, I finally drove me nutz this morning, and so I pulled the seat forward, I looked up and down around the speaker and found nothing loose, then just when I'm about to give up I look down by the tracks that the seat fits into and notice 3 little pennies, come to find out the were the cause of all my misery, must have been from the sales guy when he drove the car up to the dealership.

yeah, i have the same problem with that tinging noise. what's weird is that it started making that noise ever since i took it out of storage a few weeks ago. last year, i am almost 100% sure i never heard that (distinctive) noise before.

let us know what they come up with.

I asked the same question on another Z forum when I first got my Z. I was told it was either the exhaust or cats cooling down or the fuel pump after the car was shut off.

"hissing" = fuel pump releasing pressure
"clink" = cats and exhaust pipes cooling

350ztuning and Ranger5oh seem to have answer the question I took what they said and put it to the test. If I drive normaly (legaly, head not getting planted into the back of the seat) then I don't hear it, but if I lay on the gas and drive it a little hard, then I hear the sound right after for a little bit regardless of whether it's on or off. I really appreciate the input guys, it definitly put my mind at ease. I guess I'm so scared of getting a lemon that I worry about every detail....call me crazy. All in all though my experience with this car has been great.

I had a cop pull up next to me last night while I was driving home. It was 10:30 I was on the freeway doing 80 (in a 65) but not driving like an ***. At first he was behind me. I had no idea it was a cop, since he was on a bike, and all I could see were these bright *** lights. I figured that rather than speed up I'd maintain my speed. good thing I follow my instinct. He pulled up right next to me for about 5 seconds and waited for me to slow down, which I did immediatly. Funny thing, after that I drove home with the stereo off and was doing 70 the rest of the way home. I'm not sure if he didn't pull me over because I still have no plates, just the dealer paper, or if he was just checking out the car and warning me to keep it in check. Either way WHEW!!!

I hate to bring this up since your setted, but you can hear the pinging when you're driving? I hear the clinks and whatever only when it isn't drowned out by the engine noise. Hopefully you have really good hearing.

I don't think that it's anything to worry about, just as long as it doesn't sond like the Griswald family truckster when you shut the z off.

no I can't hear while i'm driving, but i can hear it when I'm at a stop when i'm not engaging the engine, the stereo off, and the window rolled down. does that make more sense?
