At least in Florida, you can't use the E-pass lane(s) without the E-pass plastic device box thing. It communicates with another thing in the toll plazas and knows what account to charge you. My family uses ours between all our cars so it doesn't matter which car your in (I can take it in my friend's car and we can go through the E-pass toll). Only when you go through it and don't have the device with the account, it will have a horn go off and take a picture. They'll use the car license plate to send a $100 fine to that owner.

EDIT: There are some lanes that don't have the E-pass logo on the signs over the lane, which means you can't go through that lane with the E-pass (it will give you a $100 fine).
The tolls are a real hassle imo. Everytime we go to Fla., there's one section that had a toll like every 10 minutes or so, I guess it's worth it though to see Miami, West Palm Beach, Key West, etc.

I use the toll mostly on the Turnpike from Orlando up north to Ocala and some Expressways in Orlando (only one major toll booth and the enterence ones). They're really convienent. Today and yesterday on the Turnpike all the other lanes were all packed with cars waiting at least 20 back while the E-pass lane was going 45 mph. Things like E-pass that make a convenience in life saves me a lot of stress, I find that the little things in life are what tick me off (cell phones and traffic mostly ).

According to the bottom of the pic zino1130 posted, it's actually a Navigation System.

My guess is that it is a pay-per-use type of thing...

Rouxeny, can you scan a copy of that Hyper Rev article? I'd like to get more information about it.

Calsonic makes one of these toll units. There's some info on their site...

I wholeheartedly agree about the reduced stress factor with the pass (FasTrak in my area).... that is except for some of those idiots that use the same designated lane when they DON'T HAVE THE PASS! They just sit there like the toll collector is going to come out to service them or something! Needless to say, the barrage of horn-honking moves them along the way, toll not paid

That's so weird... the picture shows ETC clearly on it, but the print at the bottom (in Japanese) says it's a Navigation System.

Yobri - FasTrak is awesome! I love crossing through the toll booths while everybody sits there waiting in line. Even better, since I have all my cars' license plates registered with my account, if I forget my transponder, they just take a pic of the license plate and take the $2 from my account. I heard toll is going to increase to $3 this July, though. I hope that's just a rumor...

Too bad that it's going to be an eventuality...

I remember the idea of a $10 toll being proposed for the GGB... now that is

I know what you're talking about when you say others get in the way of the E-pass (FasTrak) lanes. When I was driving on the Turnpike on Saturday, the toll plaza splits from a 2 lane road into about 5 toll booths for each direction. The far left one wasn't the E-pass, which it usually is, but instead the 2nd to left was. So the left lane was blocked and I had to wait a few minutes til I could get through.

There's a new thing on the Orlando East-West Expressway where to get to the booths you have to "exit" the expressway and once you pay "enter" back on (you never really get off the expressway, it's just for non-pass people). There's about 3 lanes in either direction that continue on the normal expressway with a huge metal fram structure about 20 feet in the air with the sensors. You can drive through at like 80 mphs. I couldn't find a real picture of it, but here's the best digital one I could find.

Let me see if I can understand this. "Are you Japanese? You are Chinese." I'm not sure if Chugokujin means Chinese, but it's my best guess

Al (forgot all his Japanese, which was studied as recent as 1.5 years ago)

^Was that right? (it's been well over 9 years since my last official lesson). As was evident by my mistake there... meant to say watashi wa instead of anata wa...

You still got it though Al

I was about to say...I was thinking that I might have translated it into the formal Japanese way, which I later found out no one really speaks anymore. I've been thinking of taking Chinese maybe next semester or something, but it seems like it'll be really hard. I only remember a few kanjis from Japanese class. Those being kawa, ta/da, ame, nihon, go, jin (hito). That's all I remember from the few hundred we had to learn
