Gear 1,2,3 noise
The mechanical sounds when shifting in gears 1, or 2 seem rather loud. But since this is my first manual car, I am not sure if it is supposed to be there? If i have my windows down and stereo off, I can definately hear all the sounds going on in transmission when shifting at low gears. Is this normal?
Can you describe the sound? I don't have a Z but every car I've owned has been a manual and some have just been louder than others during a shift. My current car is a 2000 Integra GS-R and it makes a very audible mechanical "click" as the shifter goes into gear. (NOT at engagement of the clutch) Other cars do this, so if you're really concerned you can call your service department or go to any other dealer and find a manual car. The "click" should be audible (from the outside) even if the engine is off and you're putting the shifter through the gears.
I have the sound AND I have an Integra GSR to compare to. The gear whine is louder than in the Integra, and the mechanical feel is also more pronounced in the Z.
I think the sound is best heard with the windows down in the Z. All my manual tranny cars have had some gear whine, but the Z is louder than those (with the exception of a really old *****'s jeep I once drove!).
I'm not sure if the sound has died down as I've put miles on the car (around 1300) or if it's just me getting used to the sound so I tune it out.
Barring any mechanical defects causing the sound, I think it's probably happening because there isn't much insulating the interior cabin from the tranny itself.

I'm not exactly sure what Zboy was talking about but he did mention "shifting". So, I don't think he means gear whine. I'm talking about the actual mechanical noise the shifter makes as it slides in and out of gear and that you can only really hear from outside the car. I'm not talking about any time the clutch is engaged at all. My GS-R's tranny whines a bit, but I thought Zboy was asking about shifting and not gear whine. Can Zboy clear this up a bit?
