I just drove 600 miles over the weekend and had plenty of time to study this sound on my car. I came to the conclusion that it always happens when the accelerator is pressed at a certain percentage of its course. Does that make sense? In other words, the sound occurs when accelerating or decelerating, but always if the peddle is at a specific point.

So are some people never getting that sound? I attributed it to loud mechanics somewhere in the transmission hitting a certain resonance speed but maybe I should talk to the dealer.
Ya I was also thinking this. That is why i created this post I wanted to know if this was a malfunction or if this is a everyday occurance to everybodies Z.

Thanks for the inputs guys! Im really starting to love this forum! haha

i get a slight whistle that almost sounds like a weak blow off valve accelerating and most noticeably between shifts (letting off gas, clutch, then on the gas again). i am not 100% sure but i believe it is coming from the intake (im stock as well). given the fact the factory intake is somewhat of a cold-air induction i thought it may have been from that. i have checked around the filter housing looking for anything obvious open, loose or detached, but nothing so far. i havent really felt a negative impact on anything, so until the JWT is here im just keeping an eye on it. good luck!

Mine does the same thing that everyone is describing. I notice it at low speed as well. The observation that is sounds like a turbo is exactly how I would describe it. It sounds a little more quiet than my VW 1.8T used to sound under WOT, but its not too annoying or anything. I figured it had to do with the intake (mine is stock) and didn't think much about it, but I'll watch this thread in the event that its more serious....

My car is having the same transmission whine noise issues yours did. Do you know what your dealer did to fix it?

I have to mine in , but it only makes the noise when its extremely cold out, and its difficult to count on the weather being cold when I take it in.

Thanks,

if the sound gets louder as your revs get higher...it is most likely the whistling noise that some owners are getting in their transmissions. i bought my Z back in January and it tended to do it only when it was very cold but it would go away as the car warmed up and the fluids got looser.

i went to the dealer and had them deal with it. it should be covered under warranty. took a day to get it fixed and i had my car back the next day. hope that's what it is and it's not something bigger. good luck.

My tranny whines. It has since day one. Mainly when I'm in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear and let the car coast down to a stop. Around 10mph it sounds like a spaceship, when I apply the gas again it goes away...when I let off it whistles.

i have the same problem. it's highly annoying when you are driving on the interstate on a long trip.

whiny noise for sure. for the time being, i am just dealing with it by turning up the BLOSE system.

still have plenty miles/time left until warranty expires, so i will wait around and see what's up.

I think this thread is covering more than one kind of noise. I too have the tranny whine and it always occurs in 6th gear right around 3k rpms ~ 80mph. It is the same sound as described above - I only hear it when the gas pedal is pressed and goes away when the pedal is up even when it is still above 3k rpms (not a wind or speed noise). I haven't noticed it in any other gear.

I also have the other sound referred to above that is similar to a blow-off valve but that is coming from my CAI and is normal though I never heard it with my stock intake.

I'm taking it in to the dealer soon to put in another complaint about the tranny (shifts like a dump truck but no grind) and will see if they have ever heard of the whine noise.

If anyone get a solution to the whine noise please post.

Check the front diffuser right under the grill. My dealership forgot to remove it, so it was wistling around 130. Took it off and did another high speed test and it was gone.
I still have the factory wrapping. Had it since Nov 02 when I bought my Z! I never had whistling noises. Now I just hear the exhaust rumble.

Well i had this question up here few month ago. Seems during that time there wasn't lots ppl with dat problems yet.

The noise i got , i feel it's from my somthing behind the steering wheel. And i have also take my car to dealer's. The service manager there said he had that noise as well.

it's more like when u rev it, around 3k~4k rpm, you can hear a sound. but for sure not from the exhaust.

well mine is 03' and it's been no problem even tho the noise still comes up when my system is off..

Tranny whines
Diff whines
flywheel grinds
clutch chatters
mirror rattles

All this stuff used to bug the s#it out of me, but then another guy in my local crew said that he used to feel the same way about all of that, and now just deals with it. I have learned to do that too.

it is an airrow dynamics issue. i think it is caused by air streaming by the little windows. the hatch over hangs a bit there. at low speeds a head wind might be to blame. but it is most definatly an airrow dynamics issue. other possiblities are the mirrors maybe try dirving fast with them in and see it the sound goes away. or you could use some mascing tape and try smoothing out the line at the end of the little window. i have this problem too but i have never realy gone to these exstents to solve it.

Yes I think this thread is covering many differnt whine noises. It seems there is mine (i) a whine in the tranny, proportionate to RPM only when cold, (ii) whine at higher speeds in 6th, and (iii) whine from wind noise.

I'd be more concerned if I was out of warranty but its annoying.

Default I know this thread is old but I know what it is.

Do u have Bluetooth hooked up? I had mine hooked up and my phone is picking up the rpm. It sounds like spool. But if I turn my stereo off it stops. Goes up with my rpms.
