Anyone know how much tax the dealer should be charging on a new car(assuming no trade-in)? I need the exact %, if anyone knows. I am in Chicago, IL.
Thanks!

I dont think anyone here but the dealer you are buying from can tell you the EXACT amount since different dealerships have diff types of documentary fees and such assosiated with them. Of course, if you know the exact amount you will be charged before the tax, simple calculate the state taxe % of that. That will be the tax amount you should pay.

The Sales tax rate on new cars isn't necessarily equal to the state sales tax on other consumer goods and services.
I can't say for Illinois, but in Texas the tax rate on cars is about 2% below the general sales tax rate.
You might want to simply call a local dealer (any dealer, not necessarily nissan) and ask them what the state sales tax rate is on new cars. They should offer the info without any problem.
Best,
Kyle

Sales tax changes by town. What town are you in? Are you in the City of Chicago or a suburb? Why not ask the dealer what the sales tax is in the area?
Remember, if you're trading a car, you only pay tax on the difference.

No answer for you, but just to let you know.
In SC, the sales tax on a vehicle is capped at $300. Granted, our property tax $$ can be pretty high, but I love not getting hit up front like that.

I lived in Chicago years ago and it all depends on where you live and who you buy from. What I mean by saying that is that if you actually live in Chicago and buy a car in Countryside you have to pay the taxes for Chicago which are higher. Living in one county and buying in another county is a similar situation.
