Default 2 Distinctive Noises You May Be Experiencing

Hey all,

Got an 03 Touring 6spd here. 13500miles or so.

Noise #1.... with a clutch out (in neutral), makes a metallic garggling (is this a word?!). I've searched the board and it seems like a lot of people have this issue but there's no pin-pointed answer to it.

Noise #2... perhaps a gear whine? when cruising (low and high speed) i hear gear whines. mostly when throttle is applied.... and sometimes when off the throttle too. it's pretty loud. perhaps a starting sign of a bad tranny?

there are other noises (like few interior quirks) that i am not too worried about right now. and the rear axle noise.. which there's a TSB for.

just wanted to know your experience and suggestion.

I think I've heard noise #1. It's even worse if you turn the engine off then it sounds like a bunch of marbles rolling around and coming to a stop.

I have #1, not sure what it is though. It just noticed it recently in the past couple weeks.

I have the #1 sound, and my manual cars in times past have also made this noise...

I wonder how far the sound carries away from the car....

#1 is often more prominent when in the garage for me. And no, I don't #1 in the garage...

I seem to always have to do #1, even if I only have intentions of doing a #2. I just think that it is impossible to do a #2 and not a #1

Sometimes I have a #3 coming from my #2. That's not pleasant sound. It also has an odd smell. Suggestions?

I'm pretty sure the "gargling" sound with the clutch out is just flywheel noise. I have it, and thats what i attribute it to. It has always been present in every manual transmission vehicle I have owned.

As for the second one. Do you have an aftermarket stereo system? It could be engine interference that transmitts through your speakers. I have this as well, though not too noticable. If not, I dont know what this sound could be.

Ding ding ding. The second sound is probably alternator whine coming in through your stereo. I installed satellite radio, and after a few trips to the store to fix some problems, I know have the dreaded whine.

#1 sounds just like a dry release bearing. I have it as well. Not much to do about it, unless you get in there and grease it, and by then might as well replace it and the clutch...

if you have a CAI, check to make sure it isn't rubbing against the engine body of the car, i have that same sound, just put some felt between where the CAI and the engine bay was touching.
