Default 04 transmission noises?

Wasnt sure exactly where to post it so i put it in here.

I recently noticed a rattling noise coming from my transmission. It happens almost everytime when im in first gear at about 1500 rpm or higher while deaccelerating(in a parking lot). I'll push the clutch out and it'll make a rattling noise like something is loose down there and it is very noticable. It also happens on occaision when shifting into second at lower rpms. I just bought the car in july and it has 5000 miles on it. Anyone else have this problem with their z? I'm going to take it in to nissan this week sometime, i just want to know what to expect.

This happens to me a lot. I have an early build 2004 G35c. The dealer couldn't do anything for me about it, since I couldn't get it to make a sound everytime.

I have it. I have a 2004 Z Base model. The dealer states its normal. Its annoying though. My concern was the clunkiness when shifting but that has smoothed out a bit.

go in a parking lot, put it in first and drive till your at 2k rpm, let off the throttle, then push the clutch in quickly. It will do it everytime in my car if i do exactly that.

It's just the dual mass flywheel rattling. Don't worry about it.

I had an auto Z for 5 months before going manual. The auto didn't have any noises at all. It's the transmission and the shifter being directly connected to everything just making vibrations. Try grabbing the lower part of the shifter thru the leather and squeeze as hard as you can, does the sound soften up?

My Base 04 SS does it sometimes and it is a normal thing...(that is what the dealer tells me.)

when driving in first, you shouldn't let the car decelerate to slow it down in gear. when going slow, shift to second gear to cruise then no problem.

if you have to slow before coming out of first, leave the gas pressed slightly for a split second as you engage the clutch before slowing down... like you are going to up-shift. that little rev will slide it out of gear without a clunk. the rattle is normal a lot of times though.

It is the dual mass flywheel. The stock flywheel is made in two parts that can move (against springs) relative to each other. When lightly loaded and changing between acceleration and decelleration (ie getting on and off the throttle, especially lightly), there can be a noise as the two parts of the flywheel shift relative positions. This is perfectly normal.

The reason the flywheel is made this way is so that shock loads are reduced on the engine and transmission when lugging around at light load. In other words, without this feature, the car would be much more prone to "bucking" when driven very slowly at low RPM. A higher RPMs and higher loadings, the flywheel parts don't make the clunking noise (or at least you don't normally hear it over the engine's noise).

Guys thanks for clearing up the tranny thing; I am about to walk away from my G for a Z. I know I know, everyone seem to have an opinion on this move. It seems like Z drivers have more fun and well I want a new car; My fellow G driver are hmmm a lil bit too mature for me

I feel your pain man. I have exactly the same issue and I found out today that I have to have a new transmission, under warranty of course. I have 9300 miles on mine and the build date is 8/03. The rattling is worse for me at idle than any other time. It drives me nuts but it should be resolved next week. Good luck with yours.

Happens to me too, I hear a clunking sound when pushing in the clutch and only in 1st gear, when decelerating.

I did not know that our dual mass flywheel was causing this. It is good to know that this is normal.

Thanks for the explanation ShopDog.
