Can your Z shift to neutral from 1st gear w/o stepping on the clutch? Mine does, I just noticed it this afternoon on my way to lunch. Is there something wrong with my car or is it just one of the feature of it that I just discovered? Info on this peeps......

 

If you match RPMs you can shift to neutral from any gear with a small push...

very normal.

 

It's called clutchless shifting and it is possible to move out of, and into any gear if the revs are matched correctly. When reaching peak speed for a gear, right when you let off the gas you can slip out of the current gear and wait for the revs to drop to where the next gear takes over and then slip into that gear. All can be done without any grinding noise - if it grinds you are not doing it 100% correctly.

Bro, I'm not even stepping on the clutch at all. My car can shift from 1st to neutral. Makes we wonder why it does that?

 

right... when the transmission spins at the right speed, you can move it out of gear without touching the clutch.

there is no real advantage in doing so unless you have a lightweight flywheel and can drop rev faster than if you had used the clutch. you can however damage the syncros etc.

thats interesting. but i still dont get it if you are in a full stop sign and it just goes in 1st from neutral. does everyone's z do that?

You shouldn't be able to push from neutral to 1st while at a full stop without using the clutch... if so, you're Z is unique (a.k.a. broken)

shifting without the clutch is done between gears while moving.

myehrick09, correct me if I am wrong but you aren't shifting from neutral to 1st without the clutch while stopped right?

 

no... going from neutral to first from a complete stop wont work.. you can shift from 1st to 2nd etc. without the clutch rather easily

 

Yes you are right, you can't but from 1st to neutral you can. As long as your speed is less than 5mph you should be able to shift easily w/o depressing the clutch according to Nissan's Service dept!
