350Z filter is TINY!!! A comparison. . .
I know this has been discussed quite a bit on the forum, however, Wow! Who knew the Nissan filters were so small. I am going to have to reconsider my oil change intervals. I was originally going to do it every 5000 miles, however after looking at the oil filter, it might be wise to go down to every 3000 miles. Here is a comparison of different oil filters.
The black one in the left side is the OEM oil filter for my '01 IS300. The white one in the middle is the longer "Maxima" filter and the one on the edge is the OEM Honda filter for my '04 VTX 1300 S V-Twin cruiser. The diameter of the Nissan filter is the same as the Honda motorcycle filter. The actual OEM 350Z filter's length is somewhere between the longer Maxima and the shorter Honda one.

They say the older bigger filter "same DIA just a good bit longer" fits but could hurt your engine since it's not able to hold up to the higher pressure......
not sure what the real reason is all I know is yes the 350Z filter is smaller then most any other filter about the size of a bike filter but I'm hoping nissan knows what they're doing.
I guess thats just more reason to change the filter every oil change

what's the benefit of a larger filter?
Doesn't the OEM filter have some kind of 'valve' that protects in some manner (I read it along time ago on this forum), whereas the aftermarket ones don't?

Mobil-1 filters have the anti-drainback valve too. They're alos better constructed than the OEM ones which use cardboard to keep the internal parts toghether.
The advantage of a bigger filter is that it can filter more particles without restricting the flow of oil. Basically, you go longer between changes. In this case though, the bigger filter also happens to be better constructed and filter better (I used to have a link to an online article comparing filters but I lost it in the great computer crash of last week.).

I use the M1-105. It's a much larger filter and better constructed as mentioned above. I'll snap some pictures. I have a bunch of extras from a large buy I did so I can send 4 for $30 shipped to whomever wants them.
You think that is small, well my Nissan Titan oil filter is as big or smaller than the filter on the right. And it takes 7qts of oil.
