Default Synchrorev question (Technical)

Any Nissan tech gurus here that can answer a question for me?

Is the Synchrorev pre-programmed using tables or does it blip based on engine RPM and speed readouts?

The reason I'd like to know is, will the feature still be intact with a lighter flywheel installed?

(My current DD has a 8 lb flywheel... I like response )

They explain how it all works here

They don't mention if the rev-match is based on a pre-programmed table (easier/cheaper) or if it is based on real-time readings of the ENGINE RPM itself.

They mention that the gates and MPH are monitored, that isn't enough information to answer my question.

First off, wheel speed (what you call MPH) is effectively the same as RPM. There's no torque converter on a manual, so in any given gear MPH is linear to RPM.

Seeing the videos of it, I would be fairly sure it is a closed loop dynamic response system. I would be very impressed if they got the kind of dead nuts, zero over shoot response they get in thier videos. However, it could be done, or it could be they took 100 videos and that was the one that looked the best.

If it is a closed loop dynamic system, then their control laws will be based on the inertia of the stock fly-wheel. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean it won't work correctly. It will still work, and depending on the bandwidth of the controls system they've setup, you may not even be able to tell the difference. I suspect, you will end up with a small amount of overshoot as long as you don't too dramatically change the inertia of the flywheel. I also don't think there is much risk of pushing the system into the unstable region, and even if you did, with enough know-how, you would be able to flash the computer with new constants for the control laws. With out the source code, it will really be a wait and see till the tuners try it out.

mmmm I'm really hoping that the system will be robust enough to revmatch with a lighter flywheel.

I currently run a 8.6lb flywheel in my torqueless wonder. More than likely I'd get a 2nd year model, and hopefully we'll know by then.

My guess would be that it is base on engine RPM and Speed. Seems it would be much easier to use these factors since they are already in place, and would probably just need some simple modification. The cold idle RPM and warm idle RPMs are controlled with the computer and throttle. I'm guessing the computer/throttle could hit and hold any RPM it's programmed to hit based on speed and gearing. If the lightweight flywheel didn't affect your cold and warm idle RPMs, I don't think it would affect the SynchroRev Match system.

Remember... this is just a guess.

I've seen a couple of other non-Nissan videos (Inside Lane, maybe?) where the driver was using the system, and it seemed to be pretty much "dead nuts", LOL. Seems like a great system. I don't think Nissan would have put it into production any other way.
