The hand brake is a set of cable operated drub brakes inside the rear rotors. They are miniature shoes sort of like older motorcycles.

yes, ebrake is a drum brake on th einside of the rotor...

thats one thing alot of people dont replace is their shoes especialy if they do alot of ebrake stuff etc...

there is an ebrake adjustment which is what that little rubber thing is covering in the rear rotor...

..or you can take the slack out by tightening the cable.

whats the best way to adjust the e-brake? Someone mentioned an in-car adjustment. I looked all through the owners manual but couldnt find anything on it. My ebrake applies almost zero brake. Thanks for any help.

I to have the same problem. I can pull the ebrake when I'm parked and the car doesn't roll but if i pull the ebrake while driving it does nothing. No lock up, and it hardly even slows me down.

Anyone have any info on how to fix this or how to have it adjusted?

I adjusted the e-brakes when I was replacing my read rotors/pads, and put them almost as tight as they can go. The ebrake works maybe a little better, but still not nearly enough.

Yesterday on my ride home from work that was an accident in 5 o'clock traffic (1 hour moving VERY slowly), and I started hearing tons of brake noise, even when I was braking at all. Either this is my pads hanging up (which doesnt seem good) or my e-brake hanging up. It annoyed the **** out of me.

The weather just got a lot colder in the last few days (-20 degrees almost), so that may have something to do with all the noise.

Either way, I still have no e-brake! and it sucks.

Ya it's really sucks that I can't even use the ebrake for anything other then parking. When I had my honda I could rip the ebrake and it would lock up in a heart beat. No idea what's up with the Z's

Take out the coin holder, and pull the e-brake up until you see the adjustment screw. It's a deep 10mm socket.

From the FSM (edit: just posted the pic):

I did this adjustment this weekend from the rear disc (rotor replacement). It is a bit weird to find the little adjuster at first, but once you know what you are looking for, it is quite easy. To adjust, you turn it full tight (you will know it is full tight...the disc will be locked and will not rotate freely anymore). Do this for both rear wheels. For kicks, go to the e-brake and pull the lever…it will be totally tight and won’t go even one click. Then back off each adjuster about 6 notches. Go back to the e-brake and pull it. It will now have about 6-7 clicks-to-tight. The main thing is to make sure that you back off enough clicks so the parking brake shoes are not dragging on the drum. If you don’t back it up enough, it will be in constant contact with the rotor hub and will cause unnecessary drag and heat buildup.

I'm pretty sure the bottom picture is the adjustment on the real wheel. If you take off the rim, you should be able to see the plug on the rotor to stick the screwdriver in for the adjustment.

and just fyi, my e-brake is still dead as ever
